Are Ford Mustang models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Mustang for its performance, styling, and driving enjoyment, and expert reviews reinforce its strong character and broad appeal. Across the years, the Mustang tends to deliver the kind of experience shoppers expect from an iconic pony car.
- Owners rate the Ford Mustang between 4.4 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking condition carefully and reviewing service history, especially on older examples.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 73% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 92.1% |
| 2025 | 90.2% |
| 2024 | 88% |
| 2023 | 85.2% |
| 2022 | 76.9% |
| 2021 | 71.3% |
| 2020 | 66.1% |
| 2019 | 61.5% |
| 2018 | 59.6% |
| 2017 | 54.6% |
| 2016 | 56.2% |
| 2015 | 55.6% |
| 2014 | 58.4% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission. The manual transmission drops fuel economy figures by 1 mpg across the board.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: the entry point with the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 10-speed automatic, and the best-value starting point for shoppers who want Mustang performance at the lowest price
- GT: adds the 5.0-liter V8, a six-speed manual, and the stronger muscle-car character many buyers want
- Dark Horse: brings the top-end performance focus with 500 hp and additional performance enhancements
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 3,092 | 34.2% |
| 2024 | 2,997 | 34.7% |
| 2023 | 2,747 | 34.2% |
| 2020 | 2,202 | 31.6% |
| 2021 | 2,197 | 31.8% |
| 2019 | 2,036 | 31.3% |
Higher-volume model years usually give you more choices, which can make it easier to compare trims, colors, and condition. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often, so you may find a broader mix of prices and deal quality.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?

| 2022 | $34,101 | +3.15% |
| 2023 | $31,808 | +6.61% |
Most Mustang model years are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you want to buy used. A few years are edging upward, so the market is mixed rather than uniformly falling. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while some older examples are holding firmer or rising.
The 2018 and 2024 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2023, 2022, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Ford Mustang

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Ford Mustang 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Ford Mustang stands out because it sits at the end of the sixth generation, a long-running version that was revealed in late 2013 and began production in the summer of 2014 for the 2015 model year. That generation kept the Mustang’s familiar coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, its rear-wheel-drive layout, and its global-market ambitions, while also introducing Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup and an independent rear suspension as part of the redesign. For shoppers, that combination makes the 2023 Mustang appealing as a modern take on an iconic nameplate: it still delivers the classic Mustang formula, but with a broader range of engines and transmissions than earlier versions.
For 2023, the Mustang could be had with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines included a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices, depending on engine, included two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That breadth is one of the car’s biggest strengths, but buyers should also be aware that EcoBoost models are known for oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. Used shoppers should also keep in mind that the average listing price for a 2023 Mustang is about $32,300, and that owners commonly praise its performance, styling, and value, while some note a lack of luxury features.
