Recently, prices have come down for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Ford Focus a good car?
Yes — the Ford Focus has earned strong owner feedback across its model years, with praise centered on fun driving dynamics, fuel economy, and everyday value. The all-generations owner rating is 4.26/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly highlight the Focus's easy handling, sporty feel, and practical value, while also appreciating its stylish design and modern features. Across the years, comfort and fuel economy also come up often as reasons shoppers keep coming back to it.
Expert reviews rate the 2014 and 2016 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in expert and owner feedback are transmission concerns, limited interior space, and some base-model powertrain complaints.
25.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Ford Focus models reliable?

- Owners rate the Ford Focus between 4.0 and 4.62 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is worth checking carefully because transmission history shows up repeatedly in owner feedback.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Focus?
Across all model years, at 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2018 | 62.1% |
| 2017 | 61.4% |
| 2016 | 60.3% |
| 2015 | 61.9% |
| 2014 | 61.5% |
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: the available parking sensors and backup camera with virtual guidelines
- Infotainment: Ford’s Sync system with voice control and Bluetooth-paired smartphone access
- Fuel efficiency: 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined, 28/40/32 combined, and 42 mpg highway
Which Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Focus offers...
- S: This is the entry point, with the 2.0-liter engine and a 5-speed manual; it suits you if you want the simplest way into the lineup.
- SE: This is the best-value trim, adding the available 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and the hatchback body style, and it suits you if you want the strongest mix of efficiency and everyday usability.
- Titanium: This trim adds the 6-speed automatic as standard equipment and suits you if you want the most upscale setup in the lineup.
What Ford Focus do most buyers choose?
The Ford Focus years with the most listings are 2015, 2017, and 2016.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 1,324 | 27% |
| 2017 | 1,269 | 26.6% |
| 2016 | 1,191 | 25.9% |
| 2014 | 1,180 | 26.8% |
| 2018 | 867 | 26.1% |
Higher-volume years usually draw more shoppers because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right price, mileage, and condition combination. They also tend to be the easiest years to shop if you want a broad selection of trims and listings.
What is the Ford Focus's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | $9,267 | −8.91% |
| 2015 | $7,669 | −7.34% |
| 2016 | $8,422 | −6.45% |
| 2018 | $10,390 | −4.76% |
| 2014 | $7,050 | −1.96% |
Most of the model years shown here are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. The sharpest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while the older years are changing more slowly. That pattern gives you more room to find value without chasing a rising-price market.
The 2014, 2018, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Ford Focus safe?
- 2016: 7/10
- 2015: 7/10
- 2014: 9/10
For the safest used buy, the 2014 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Ford Focus now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2017 model is at −8.91% versus a year ago, and the 2016 model is at −6.45%.
- Deal availability: The 2017 model has 26.6% good and great deals, and the 2016 model has 25.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2015 model has the most listings at a current average price of $7,669. The Ford Focus offers a fun, easygoing driving character that makes it appealing as an everyday used car.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest model offers a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, plus a 1.0-liter EcoBoost with 123 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: Ford’s Sync system adds voice control, Bluetooth-paired smartphone access, and access to the stereo and other functions.
- Safety: The latest model adds backup camera virtual guidelines, available parking sensors, and wide-angle side mirrors that reduce blind spots.
- Starting price: The base MSRP is $17,225.
If you're buying used today, the 2015 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2019 inventory to mature.

Customers say
The Ford Focus has been praised by owners across multiple model years for its fun driving experience, great fuel economy, and reliable performance. Many drivers appreciate its easy handling and modern features, making it a good value for money. However, concerns have been raised about interior space limitations, transmission issues, and the lack of power in some models, particularly in base versions. Despite the discontinuation of the model, the Focus remains a popular choice for its stylish design and cost-effective maintenance.

Everything about the car is good. The glove compartment was broken but its an easy fix. Drives like a manual. It was clean to the point it almost looked brand new. I also wouldve liked 2 key fob instead of one.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Focus stands out as a refreshed version of Ford’s small car, and the update gives it a more polished feel without changing its basic mission. It is a 4-door, 5-passenger small car, and the expert test drive data says it has improved in some key areas for 2016 while still not being perfect. That same source also notes that it retains the title of America’s Best Small Car for now, which helps explain why it remained a notable choice in a crowded economy-car segment.
What makes the 2016 Ford Focus appealing is the way it balances everyday practicality with refinement. The summary frames success in this class around familiar priorities such as fuel economy, price, cupholders, ride quality, and easy-to-use controls, and the Focus is presented through that pragmatic lens. It is described as much more refined than the two generations before it, and the user review summary reinforces that appeal by pointing to smooth rides, great fuel economy, sporty handling, and a generally satisfying ownership experience. At the same time, the car is not portrayed as flawless: the expert test drive data says it is still not perfect, and owners mentioned concerns about engine responsiveness and a gearshift that can be too smooth, which suggests the Focus’s strengths are balanced by a few everyday frustrations.
