Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns an expert rating of 6.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10. It’s built for driver engagement first, with fantastic handling, especially at the limit, and a quick-revving engine that makes modest power feel more entertaining than the numbers suggest. That focus makes sense if you want a small sports car that prioritizes steering feel, balance, and manual-transmission fun over everyday practicality. Trade-offs include tight cargo and passenger space, modest power, and a ride that can get hard. Good and great deals account for 27.9% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is presented as a simple, driver-focused sports car, and that simplicity can be a plus for long-term ownership. Its performance setup is straightforward, with a 2.4-liter flat-four, rear-wheel drive, and a standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential, which supports predictable behavior and easy control at the limit. Toyota also includes Service Connect for vehicle health reports and maintenance updates, which can help you stay on top of upkeep during ownership. The main long-term risk for used buyers is that this is still a low-volume sports car with a firm ride and limited practicality, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history check. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension condition, tire wear, brake condition, and signs of hard use, since this car is often driven enthusiastically. Pay close attention to whether the car has the equipment you want, because trim and tire setup change the driving character quite a bit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim uses cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires, while the Premium trim adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. The Yuzu Edition adds matte-black wheels, yellow interior accents, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint.
• Powertrain: The 2.4-liter flat-four makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and you can pair it with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, while the automatic is the better pick for fuel economy.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu get blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with Sport and Track layouts. Toyota also includes a year of Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. Manual models are rated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GR86 formula with cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires. It’s the least expensive way in, but it also leaves out some of the nicer cabin and wheel/tire upgrades found higher up.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. If you want the GR86 to feel more special and sharper on the road, this is the one to target.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive trim, with matte-black wheels, gloss-black lug nuts, Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers, yellow interior accent stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint. It’s the choice if you want the most exclusive version and the extra performance hardware.

The Premium and Yuzu trims also get blind-spot monitors, while automatic models add rear parking sensors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it’s a reasonable time to shop if you can compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 219 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 83.6% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86’s safety picture is limited, and it has an incomplete crash-test record. In IIHS testing, it gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems, and it has not been subjected to the other IIHS tests. It also had no NHTSA crash-test ratings available at the time of writing.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors. There are no safety-related options, so if you want more driver-assistance coverage, you need to shop the higher trims.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It keeps the GR86 formula focused on handling, a quick-revving engine, and manual-transmission fun.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It adds performance upgrades and a limited-production Hakone Edition.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version of Toyota’s lightweight sports coupe and you’re shopping for a fun, driver-first used car, the 2026 GR86 is the primary target. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2025 is worth a look because it brings extra performance flavor and may broaden your shopping options.
