overall

Summary
With 186 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $45,740, 33.9% of 2024 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Toyota 4Runner 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 4.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. It is described as an accomplished off-road-capable vehicle, and its all-terrain capabilities remain one of its clearest strengths. Buyers who value utility will also appreciate its plenty of cargo space, which helps make it practical as well as tough.
At the same time, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner shows its age in ways that matter to many shoppers. It trails newer rivals when it comes to technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, and its aging platform is said to be in desperate need of a full redesign. The driving experience is also a weak point, with poor handling, sluggish performance, and poor fuel economy among its drawbacks. Even so, owners are often pleased with its spaciousness, power, and aesthetics, and some also praise the improved ride quality along with features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring.

The features are great. However, I have it a 4 because the color is off!!! If you look at the photo it is obviously Red. The description says it is Terra. I called the dealership and it is defininetly not red but a brown color, terra cotta.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and aesthetics, and they also like the improved ride quality plus features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The overview also points to strong utility, with plenty of cargo space and clear appeal if you want a rugged SUV for off-road use.
The trade-offs are just as clear: it trails newer rivals in technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, and the driving experience is held back by poor handling and sluggish performance. If you want a tough, utility-first SUV rather than a modern all-rounder, this model year fits that use case better than shoppers who prioritize refinement.
With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on spaciousness, power, and a generally satisfying ownership experience. The expert notes also reinforce that reputation by describing it as a vehicle with a strong reputation for reliability and durability.
That said, used buyers should still plan for the usual age-related ownership risks that come with an older platform, especially if the vehicle has seen hard use or minimal maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, trail duty, or frequent short trips. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s age and rugged mission make maintenance history and wear patterns especially important.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 starts with the essentials, but the range-topping TRD Pro adds underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack. The interior also feels dated, with an analog instrument panel and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen that looks and feels behind the times.
- Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Most trims are rear-wheel drive with four-wheel drive available, while the TRD Pro comes standard with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited also add a surround-view camera system, and only the Limited gets front and rear parking proximity sensors.
- Infotainment: The system uses an eight-inch touchscreen and includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It does not offer the more advanced off-road apps and gauges found in some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined.
Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: SR5 and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for the top-end off-road extras. It gives you the basic formula, but the cabin and tech still feel dated.
- TRD Pro: This is the more serious off-road trim, with standard four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a tubular roof rack. It suits you best if trail capability matters more than everyday refinement.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the Limited trim gets the extra parking sensors if that matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,869 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.06% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 91.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,835, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $46,911 sits slightly above last year's $44,231.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s rugged reputation and utility. For a future seller, that can help support pricing if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and lightly used.
The fact that prices are already near the year-round high also means upside may be limited unless your 4Runner has especially desirable equipment or unusually strong condition. If you buy carefully and keep it in good shape, you should be in a better position to preserve value later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection from NHTSA, five-star ratings for side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Good result for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes Marginal and Poor results.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited add a surround-view camera system, while only the Limited gets front and rear parking proximity sensors.
The mixed crash-test results are the main caveat here, especially if safety is a top priority for you.
Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.06% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2024 keeps the rugged, utility-first formula while remaining a proven off-road SUV.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,356, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $46,911 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and a limited-production anniversary edition.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $50,300, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $46,911 average.
- It brings more capability, power, comfort, and technology with a more contemporary powertrain lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the proven, rugged version of the 4Runner and can find a clean example at a competitive price, the 2024 is the safer buy. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2023 is the better value play, while the 2025 makes sense if you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay more for it.
