How much does the 2023 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

With 923 listings available, you have a fairly healthy amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Toyota Prius earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The data points to a Prius that is much more appealing than older versions, with sleek styling, a stronger powertrain, and a more polished cabin. It also fits buyers who want a hybrid that feels more complete than the old efficiency-first formula, while still delivering the fuel-sipping character the name is known for.

The main trade-offs are a significant price bump over the previous model and an engine that can drone loudly when pushed hard. Interior space and cargo room have also decreased, so you should weigh style and efficiency against practicality.

With 37.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview and expert notes both point to a Prius that builds on Toyota’s reputation for dependable hybrid ownership, with a powertrain that feels more mature and a cabin that comes across as solidly put together. The expert review also describes the car as a comfortable, engaging daily driver, which supports the idea that it should be easy to live with over time.

The powertrain is described as more athletic and eager than before, with no lag to speak of and ample acceleration in everyday driving. The review also notes that the brakes have only a minor squishiness typical of hybrids, which suggests the car’s mechanical behavior should feel familiar rather than troublesome.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the higher purchase price leaves less room for error if you end up with a poorly maintained example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, signs of hard use, and any issues that might not show up in photos. Focus especially on overall condition, since the cabin and cargo area are smaller than before and you’ll want to make sure the car has been cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE gives you the core Prius experience with standard safety gear and an 8-inch touchscreen, while the XLE adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key. The Limited adds the larger screen, glass roof, JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate, and Digital Key, making it the most feature-rich choice.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Front-wheel-drive models make 194 total horsepower, while all-wheel-drive models make 196 total horsepower, and the continuously variable automatic transmission helps keep the car smooth in daily driving.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, while Advanced Park is available on the Limited.
• Infotainment: The LE and XLE come with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE can be upgraded to a 12.3-inch screen, and that larger display is standard on the Limited. All trims also get a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, six USB-C ports, and an AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The review says the Prius keeps its fuel-sipping character, but no MPG figure is stated in the data provided.

Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Prius is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you the core Prius formula with standard safety tech, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and no option packages beyond paint choices. If you want the lowest entry price and the essentials, this is the trim to start with.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key. It also opens the door to the larger 12.3-inch screen and the fixed glass roof, making it the sweet spot if you want more comfort and convenience without going all the way to the top trim.
• Limited: This is the fully loaded choice, with the larger screen and glass roof standard, plus a JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, and Digital Key. Choose this if you want the most upscale Prius experience and are willing to pay for it.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup, and Advanced Park is available only on the Limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 923 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 83.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,061, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $27,860 sits slightly below last year's $27,938.

That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern usually means buyers still see value in the model, even as newer examples enter the market.

Because the current average is close to last year’s level, you’re not looking at a vehicle that has been dropping sharply in value. That can make ownership feel less risky if you buy at the right price and keep the car in good condition.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2023 Prius has not been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA yet.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, and Advanced Park is available on the Limited trim.

The main caveat is that there are no crash-test results yet, so you’re relying on the standard safety equipment and the expert safety score rather than published test ratings.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It brings a major styling overhaul and a big power increase while keeping the Prius’s efficient character.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $29,550, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $27,860 average.
• It adds available plug-in hybrid power and up to 57 mpg combined.

The bottom line: If you want the newer design and stronger performance at a lower used-market price, the 2023 is the better starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s added flexibility and slightly broader appeal, the 2024 is worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2023 offers the stronger value proposition right now.
