CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 867 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,365, 33.3% of 2023 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Prius 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
86.9% of 2023 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out first for its new look. After decades of being known more for efficiency than style, it arrives as one of the better-looking new cars to hit the market recently, and that sleeker design is a major part of its appeal. It also brings a huge jump in power without giving up the fuel-sipping character that made the Prius famous, so it feels more modern without abandoning its core mission.
That combination makes the 2023 Toyota Prius an especially interesting hatchback for buyers who want efficiency but do not want to settle for a car that feels dated. It also comes with impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort features. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: it carries a significant price bump over the previous model, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased.

I got my XLE for 1000 under retail price. Right place right time I guess and so far I only have a few miles on it. So not to much to say other than it has remote start that is not listed on the window sticker and all the controls are easy to do. My biggest pet peeve is the antenna does not pick up my stations that my other Prius did in my driveway but they do come in down the road. Love the detail on the body lines that doesn’t look like the old ones. So far fuel mileage is way off on the estimate left for cruising range. Happy with Prius and will continue to buy them. Had the last one for almost 10 years so fingers crossed.

The information on the dash display might take some time to become familiar with. On my test drive I had trouble finding information that I wanted, partly because the graphics seem small compared to in my older Prius.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,433 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,063 |
| Year-Round High | $28,552 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,114 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.13% |
Prices are up 1.13% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 886 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Prius earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
The data points to a Prius that feels much more modern than the old one: it has a sleeker design, a stronger powertrain, and a more polished cabin than the efficiency-first Prius you may remember. It also fits buyers who want a hybrid that still feels practical for everyday driving, with standard safety equipment and a reasonable mix of comfort and tech.
The main trade-offs are that it costs more than the previous generation, the engine can drone when you push it hard, and interior space and cargo room have shrunk. That makes it a stronger fit if you value style, efficiency, and a more contemporary driving experience over maximum utility.
Good and great deals percentage: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Prius is described as a solid, stout-feeling hybrid with a well-built cabin and a powertrain that feels more eager than the older model. Its hybrid system is presented as a meaningful step forward in everyday drivability, while still keeping the fuel-sipping character that defines the nameplate.
The expert notes also point to a comfortable ride and a powertrain that feels appropriate rather than strained in normal use. That said, the engine can get loud when you ask for hard acceleration, so long-term ownership will likely feel best if you value efficiency and calm commuting more than aggressive driving.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any listing you like, even if the market looks relatively clean. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you want to confirm the condition of the hybrid system, brakes, tires, and cabin wear. Focus on whether the car matches the trim and equipment level you expect, since the feature spread is meaningful across the lineup.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE gives you the essentials, while the XLE adds more comfort and convenience equipment, and the Limited brings the most upscale cabin and tech. The base trim leaves out some of the nicer upgrades, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a better daily-driving experience.
- Powertrain: The 2023 Prius uses a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Front-wheel-drive models make 194 total horsepower, while all-wheel-drive models make 196 total horsepower, and the car is tuned for stronger everyday acceleration than the previous Prius.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, while Advanced Park is reserved for the top Limited trim.
- Infotainment: The LE and XLE come with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE can be optioned with a 12.3-inch screen, and that larger display is standard on the Limited. All trims also get a 7-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The new generation keeps the Prius’ fuel-sipping reputation, but the source material does not give a specific mpg figure for this model year.
Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Prius is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Prius experience with the standard safety suite, wireless smartphone integration, and the essentials you need for efficient commuting. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and do not need extra comfort features.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel with 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
- Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, adding the larger screen, glass roof, JBL audio, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate, and Digital Key. Choose it if you want the most comfort and convenience features and are willing to pay for them.
Advanced Park is available only on the Limited trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you have some room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 886 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.13% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,063, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $28,433 sits slightly above last year's $28,114.
That modest increase suggests the market has held up well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A price trend like this usually means buyers still see value in the Prius’ mix of efficiency, style, and standard equipment.
Because the model also has a strong user rating, it should continue to attract shoppers who want a hybrid with broad appeal. That kind of steady demand can help support resale value over time, especially if your car is clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2023 Prius has Toyota’s latest suite of active safety features bundled together as Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
That standard package includes radar-based adaptive cruise control that works at any speed, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. You also get stability control, traction control, eight airbags, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
The safety equipment is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features. Advanced Park is available on the Limited trim if you want hands-free automatic parallel parking.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.13% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a major styling overhaul and a big power increase without giving up the Prius’ efficiency-first mission.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,884, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,433 average.
- It adds broader appeal with available AWD and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The bottom line: If you want the newer design and stronger performance at a lower average price, the 2023 is the better starting point. If you are price-sensitive and want the most affordable path into a newer Prius, the 2023 still makes sense; if you want the latest model-year updates and can spend more, the 2024 is worth a look.
