CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 1,377 currently listed for sale and an average price of $56,257.00, 34.0% of 2023 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus GX 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
90.8% of 2023 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus GX stands out as a body-on-frame luxury SUV with a distinctly old-school character. It is aimed at buyers who want towing and off-road ability, but also want to do that in comfort and style. Its V8 engine is a major part of its appeal, giving it a strong personality in a small field of competitors, and its commanding driving position adds to the sense that you are sitting high above the road.
That traditional setup also helps explain both its strengths and its drawbacks. The GX’s off-road capability is one of its clear advantages, and owners often praise its rugged yet refined feel. At the same time, it is held back by poor fuel economy, a cramped third row, and outdated technology, so its appeal is strongest for shoppers who value proven capability and luxury more than modern packaging or efficiency.

Third GX. They are not state of the art in driver technology, the mileage isn’t great, and it’s not going to pin your head to the back of the headrest—BUT, you will only need to get rid of this car when you get sick of it. Bullet proof, comfortable, great build quality, and safe.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the last real V8 GX. Isnt it funny how the experts rate the 2023 at a 6/10 and the real world owners rate it a 4.5 out of 5. Ill take real world owners opinions over so called experts any day The 2024 is delayed, recalled before it is even available and has the same engine as the Tundra, twin turbo garbage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen towing, winter driving, or off-road use. Focus on wear items that can reveal how hard the vehicle has been used, and pay close attention to the condition of the cabin and electronics since those are common pain points in older luxury SUVs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim has a more limited feature set, while higher trims add more luxury equipment and options. The interior also shows some plastic-heavy surfaces that undercut the upscale impression.
- Powertrain: The GX uses a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. It delivers strong low-end power, but fuel economy is poor at 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.
- Safety package: It includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition.
- Infotainment: The GX has a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The system still feels dated, and the graphics and response lag behind newer rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined, which is a major downside if you drive a lot.
Which 2023 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Lexus GX is offered in 4 trim levels: GX 460, Premium, Luxury, and Black Line Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The GX 460 gives you the core V8, 4WD, and safety equipment, but it lacks the richer luxury touches and option flexibility of the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: Premium is the best value if you want a more upscale setup without jumping to the top-end price of Luxury.
- Premium/top trim: Luxury adds the most premium feel, including the 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system as standard equipment.
- Off-road trim: Black Line Special Edition is limited to 3,000 units and adds the panoramic monitor as standard, but it is more of a special-edition package than a daily-driver necessity.
The GX’s safety suite includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams, but it misses lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Lexus GX?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,388 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,499.56, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $56,150 sits slightly below last year's $58,034.
That price movement suggests the GX has softened a bit in the used market, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the model’s niche appeal and loyal following can help support demand over time. Its strong owner satisfaction also helps keep it attractive to future shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Neither NHTSA nor IIHS crash-tested the 2023 Lexus GX, so you do not get a formal crash-test benchmark here. Lexus does equip it with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams, which gives you a solid standard safety foundation. It does miss lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition, so the driver-assistance suite is not fully loaded.
Because the GX is based on an older design, you should weigh its standard safety tech against the lack of modern crash-test data and the vehicle’s age.
Should I buy a 2023 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a V8, strong towing ability, and off-road capability in a comfort-focused luxury SUV.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,681, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $56,150 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road capability and a traditional luxury-SUV identity.
The bottom line: If you want the GX’s V8 character, towing ability, and old-school appeal, the 2023 is the better fit. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the same core formula.
