How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 14.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,751 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

It’s a distinctive choice if you want rugged capability wrapped in a more upscale package, though you should expect compromises in refinement and value. The user rating is 3/5, and the expert rating is 7.17/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

The Defender’s appeal comes from its classic style, wide range of customization, and many powertrain and body choices, including the extended 130 for added practicality. The trade-offs are clear: the cabin is too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is considered poor value for money.

For you, that means the Defender makes the most sense if you want something distinctive rather than conventional and can live with a more rugged interior and road manners. 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is built around durability and capability, with a rugged mission that carries through to its construction and off-road hardware. Its performance setup includes permanent four-wheel drive, Terrain Response 2, and strong off-road hardware that helps it handle demanding terrain.

The six-cylinder powertrain uses a 48-volt mild hybrid setup, with seamless stop-start operation and an electric supercharger for quicker low-speed response. The Defender also offers a first scheduled maintenance visit that is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a vehicle designed for hard use can be expensive to keep in top shape if it has been driven that way.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, suspension, and bodywork, since the Defender’s rugged personality can hide hard use better than a more conventional SUV.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model’s manual fabric seats and no-name stereo are a noticeable step down, while the S adds heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian stereo. The X-Dynamic SE adds silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec trim details, while the X brings more equipment and a more upscale setup.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a turbocharged four-cylinder, a mild-hybrid inline-six, a non-hybrid turbo-six in the 130 S, or a supercharged V8. The four-cylinder is the least compelling choice, while the six-cylinder balances performance and fuel economy better, and the V8 is the strongest performer.
• Safety package: Lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking are standard. A 360-degree camera system, head-up display, and automatic steering when reversing a trailer are available, while self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: The standard 10-inch touchscreen is joined by an optional 11.4-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, connected apps, and navigation come standard, and the larger screen is easier to read.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder 110 is rated at 17 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined, while the six-cylinder returns 18/23/20 mpg. The V8 is rated at 14/19/16 mpg.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 90, 110, 130, and X.

Here's the short version:

• 90: This is the most compact choice if you want the Defender’s style and capability in a shorter two-door body. It suits you best if maneuverability matters more than rear-seat or cargo space.
• 110: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it gives you the four-door layout and the broadest balance of practicality, equipment, and price. It’s the one to start with if you want the Defender experience without stretching too far.
• 130: Choose this if you want the most practicality, since it adds the extended body style and extra room. It makes the most sense if you need more passenger or cargo flexibility.
• X: This is the most feature-rich choice, with air suspension, a locking rear differential, upgraded Terrain Response 2, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It’s the right pick if you want the most capability and equipment.

The X trim also brings the most advanced safety and driver-assistance equipment in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,751 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.19% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $51,875, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $51,875 sits slightly below last year's $60,453.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more carefully now. If you purchase at today’s average or below, you may have less immediate depreciation pressure than someone who bought when prices were higher. For a future seller, that means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, especially because the Defender’s pricing can vary widely by equipment level.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender scored five of five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips the Defender with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect for a vehicle in this class. Standard safety equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking, while a 360-degree camera system and head-up display are available. Automatic steering when reversing a trailer is also available, but self-steering highway assist is not offered.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.19% compared with last year.
• The 2023 adds the Defender 130, which brings more practicality to the lineup.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,892, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $51,875 average.
• It adds an expanded trim lineup and new tech updates.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $57,984, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $51,875 average.
• It broadens the lineup with more trims and features.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right path if you want the added practicality of the 130 and a market that has softened. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense only if you want the newer trim and feature expansion.
