CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Kia Soul
overall

Summary
With 2,077 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,426, 32.8% of 2023 Kia Souls for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Kia Soul 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
83.1% of 2023 Soul models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Kia Soul stands out because it proves economy cars do not have to be boring. Its boxy styling gives it an instantly recognizable look, and the Soul’s appeal comes from combining that distinctive design with practical everyday usefulness and strong value. It also strikes a useful balance between a car and a crossover, with tidy proportions and an upright driving position that help it feel different from many small hatchbacks.
For 2023, the Kia Soul gets more standard driver-assist features, small styling tweaks, and a revised lineup of trim levels that includes LX, S, EX, and GT-Line models. The X-Line and Turbo variants have been discontinued. That makes the 2023 model year feel more focused, while still preserving the Soul’s core strengths of style, space, and value. Buyers should note, though, that performance is fairly pedestrian, the seats are uncomfortable, and advanced safety features are not standard.

I absolutely love the kia 2023. Lots of features never had with my Dads 2014. The back up camera is a must. Trying to get used to the car shutting off at stoplights. Such an easy c a r to drive, easy to park, turn around. Live the brights turn on and off as automatically. Very smooth ride compared to the ten year old car..

With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free in everyday use, with a reputation for being easy to count on. Expert testing reinforces that impression by describing the Soul’s powertrain as a basic package that still works well and by noting that the transmission avoids many of the usual CVT complaints.
Kia’s warranty coverage also helps reduce ownership anxiety, especially if you plan to keep the car for a while. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core mechanical package and more about making sure the specific example you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Soul?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, because the Soul’s value proposition depends heavily on how well the car has been kept.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more convenience and comfort features. The GT-Line stands out for its sportier appearance and available equipment, but the base trim is where you’re most likely to notice feature gaps.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The setup is tuned more for everyday ease than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. Moving up to the Soul S adds lane change assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
- Infotainment: The base LX gets an 8-inch touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, while higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with the smaller screen, and wireless phone charging is available on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: Most models are rated at 30 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 33 mpg highway), while the EX is rated at 31 mpg combined (29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway).
Which 2023 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2023 Kia Soul is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, S, EX, and GT-Line.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the value-first choice if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment. It still gets the core infotainment and safety tech, but you give up some of the comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a meaningful step up in safety equipment, including blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, without jumping all the way to the top of the lineup.
- EX: This is the trim to consider if you want the slightly better fuel economy figure and a more comfort-oriented setup. It makes the Soul feel more polished for daily use.
- GT-Line: This is the style-focused choice, with the sportiest look and the most upscale available equipment. It makes sense if you want the most distinctive Soul and are willing to pay for it.
The safety-package step-up from LX to S is especially important if you want the most useful driver-assistance features without relying on options.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Soul?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,050 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,723, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $17,384 sits slightly below last year's $18,180.
That kind of price movement suggests the Soul has softened a bit in the used market, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you can expect later as a seller. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can still protect a good share of its value.
The Soul’s appeal is tied closely to its practicality, distinctive design, and strong value story, so well-kept examples should continue to attract interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Kia Soul safe?
The 2023 Kia Soul earns Good ratings from IIHS in all crash-test categories, though it gets an Acceptable rating for child-seat anchor ease of use. It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. Moving up from LX to S adds lane change assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The GT-Line Technology Package adds junction-turning forward collision warning, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, and Highway Drive Assist with automated lane centering.
The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is not standard, and the automated lane-centering system did not perform especially well in expert testing.
Should I buy a 2023 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model adds more standard driver-assist features and a revised trim lineup, while dropping the X-Line and Turbo variants.
The bottom line: The 2023 Kia Soul makes the most sense if you want the model’s quirky style, practical space, and strong value in a more focused lineup. If you’re price-sensitive, you can still shop nearby years, but the 2023 stands out for its updated standard safety content and broad market availability, so it’s the cleaner pick if you find a well-priced, accident-free example.
