The 2023 Chevrolet Express Cargo is a line of full-size commercial vans that is similar to the GMC Savana Cargo van. It carries over unchanged for the 2023 model year. The Express Cargo can be configured with some passenger capacity, but its large, easily customized cargo area is its main purpose.

Design

The Express Cargo is available in 2500 and 3500 versions, designations which indicate towing and payload capacity, and it also comes in both Regular and Extended Wheelbase models. Maximum cargo capacity in the Regular Wheelbase van is 239.4 cubic feet, and the Extended Wheelbase offers 283.6 cubic feet. The van itself is plain, designed for easy customization and upfits for a variety of commercial purposes.

Powertrain

The 2023 Chevy Express Cargo features a 4.3-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, rated for 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque. The Express Cargo is also available with a 6.6-liter V8 that produces 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, and a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. The Express Cargo offers maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 4,280 pounds. Unlike many rivals, the Express Cargo lineup is not available with an all-wheel drive (AWD) option.

Interior

The entry-level Express Cargo, the WT trim, offers two vinyl-covered front seats with manual adjustments, but it can be configured with seating for five passengers and power-adjustable front seats. Standard features include cargo tie-downs, power locks and windows, and cargo cubbies. Options include a driver-only high bucket seat configuration, rubberized vinyl floor covering, upgraded cloth or vinyl upholstery choices, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The main draw is the large number of upfit packages that convert the Express Cargo into different types of commercial vehicles, such as hotel shuttles.

Technology

The Chevrolet Express Cargo’s tech features include an AM/FM stereo with an MP3 player, interior lighting, OnStar, and Wi-Fi hot spot capability. Options include an eight-point digital compass, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and SiriusXM satellite radio. These features fall far short of amenities offered by rivals, with more modern competitors offering car-like features such as touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

Safety

Like most commercial vehicles and large cargo vans, the Chevrolet Express Cargo has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Express Cargo comes standard with a reversing camera, hill-start assist, and GM’s OnStar telematics system. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are available.

Pricing

The 2023 Chevrolet Express Cargo van is currently available to order. As of this writing, Chevy lists MSRP for the base 2500 Regular Wheelbase model as $39,895, while the 2500 Extended Wheelbase model starts at $41,795. For the 3500 Regular Wheelbase model, the MSRP starts at $42,995. The 3500 Extended Wheelbase has a base MSRP of $43,795.
