CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW X7
overall

Summary
With 1,519 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,505.00, 35.9% of 2023 BMW X7s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW X7 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
89.1% of 2023 BMW X7 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW X7 stands out as a large luxury SUV that combines strong performance with a comfortable, quiet cabin. It is also notable for receiving a significant refresh, including new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. Those updates give it a more modern look and feel, but the changes are not universally welcome.
What makes the 2023 BMW X7 distinctive is that its new styling may be polarizing, and its technology can be unintuitive. In other words, it brings meaningful updates, but some of the most visible and most-used changes may not improve the experience for every buyer. For shoppers who value a powerful engine, comfort, and a hushed interior, it still has clear appeal, even if the redesign is not an unqualified step forward.

A lot of pluses for 2023 X7; exterior styling, 40 more hp = 365. However, three interior design changes = no buy from me. I bought a 2022 X7 M50 because it has real climate buttons, real traditional shifter and a dash screen (2 actually) vs the gimmicky oversize screen with dozens of capacitive touch buttons for climate, etc.

Its the same as 2019, with no changes in the vehicle except for a larger purchase price for the same technology.

Yes — the 2023 BMW X7 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
It combines strong performance with a comfortable, quiet cabin, and the refresh gives it a more modern look and the latest iDrive infotainment system. At the same time, the new styling may be polarizing, and the technology can be unintuitive.
The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the unintuitive technology.
For you, that means the X7 makes the most sense if you want a large luxury SUV that emphasizes power, comfort, and a hushed interior more than it prioritizes simple controls or universally appealing styling.
29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 X7 is described as sturdy and well built, with a cabin that feels solid even on rough roads. Its powertrain is presented as strong and well suited to the vehicle’s size, and the safety systems are said to perform as they should without annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses.
The X7’s performance and build quality point to a vehicle that should hold up well if it has been maintained properly. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is ending up with a neglected example whose complex technology or premium repair needs have not been kept in check.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW X7?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin electronics, control interfaces, and overall condition, since this model’s technology is a major part of the ownership experience. You should also pay close attention to how the vehicle presents inside and out, because the X7 is a premium SUV where wear, trim condition, and feature operation matter a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Design Pure Excellence model uses chrome exterior trim, while the M Sport replaces that bright chrome with a dark finish. The styling split matters because the base look is more traditional, while the M Sport is the more aggressive choice.
- Powertrain: The lineup starts with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and 48-volt mild hybrid system, while the M60i upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a similar 48-volt hybrid setup. The six-cylinder is the value choice, while the V8 is the stronger performer.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system uses a curved display setup, but many functions have been moved into the screen menus. That means you should test the interface carefully, especially for climate and seat controls, because the system can feel less intuitive than you might expect.
- Fuel efficiency: The six-cylinder xDrive40i is estimated to return 22 mpg combined, while the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW X7 trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW X7 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i and M60i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim because it pairs the lower starting price with the six-cylinder engine and an estimated 22 mpg combined. It makes the most sense if you want the X7’s comfort, quiet cabin, and strong all-around performance without paying for the V8.
- M60i: This is the choice if you want the strongest acceleration and the most upscale equipment. It upgrades to the V8, adds a surround-view camera system, and is the better fit if performance matters more to you than value.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the M60i gets the surround-view camera system as a trim-level upgrade.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW X7?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,516 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $55,325.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW X7's resale value?
The current average of $55,299 sits slightly below last year's $65,517.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, the current discount may leave some room for future stabilization if demand holds. The model’s premium positioning and strong feature set can still support buyer interest, but the softer pricing means your eventual resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i trim adds a surround-view camera system, and available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
The safety systems are described as working as intended, with no annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses. The main caveat is that crash test results from NHTSA and IIHS are not available.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW X7 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model brings a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed X7 with its updated styling and newer tech, the 2023 is the right target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you should shop carefully for the best deal and be prepared to prioritize condition and equipment over the newest look.
