Is the 2023 BMW 8 Series a good car?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series earns an expert rating of 7.3/10.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

It fits well if you want a flagship grand tourer that blends luxury and sportiness, with multiple body styles that broaden its appeal and a stylish design that helps define its personality. The trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard, and the car’s value proposition is strongest when you focus on the core driving experience rather than loading up on extras.

There are 35.4% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 BMW 8 Series reliable?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series is positioned as a premium grand tourer with a polished cabin and strong performance, and its six-cylinder setup is the most efficient choice in the lineup. The expert review also describes the 840i as a satisfying drive with an interior that lives up to the model’s prestige.

The performance notes point to a quick, refined powertrain with a comfortable ride and handling that hides the car’s bulk well. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention BMW’s four-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and four years of roadside assistance with unlimited mileage.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-spec versions can bring significantly worse efficiency and more expensive upkeep than the six-cylinder models.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW 8 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s appeal depends on both its luxury presentation and its performance character.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles, with 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8 Competition, and Alpina B8 variants. The base 840i is the value play, while the higher trims add more power and a more exclusive character.
• Powertrain: The 840i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 335 horsepower, while the M850i xDrive steps up to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 horsepower. The M8 Competition and Alpina B8 sit at the top of the range with even more output and a more serious performance focus.
• Safety package: The base 840i only gets forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The optional Driving Assistance Package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition, parking assist, park distance control, and a surround-view camera system, while the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic-jam assist, and active lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: All models get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, BMW iDrive, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Harman Kardon audio system, a head-up display, and a WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The 840i gets 24 mpg combined, with 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The M850i xDrive is rated at 19 mpg combined, while the M8 Competition is rated at 17 mpg combined.

Which 2023 BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8 Competition, and Alpina B8.

Here's the short version:

• 840i: This is the best-value choice if you want the 8 Series experience without jumping into V8 pricing. It still gives you the flagship styling, the standard tech suite, and the balanced grand-touring character that makes the car appealing in the first place.
• 840i xDrive: Choose this if you want the same core package as the 840i but prefer all-wheel drive for added traction and confidence.
• M850i xDrive: This is the step-up pick if you want a much stronger V8 and a more serious performance edge without going all the way to the top-tier models.
• M8 Competition: Pick this if you want the most aggressive performance character in the lineup. It is the clear choice for buyers who care most about outright speed and track-minded capability.
• Alpina B8: This is the luxury-performance alternative if you want very high output with a more refined, autobahn-focused personality.

The safety package is limited on the base trim, so if advanced driver-assistance features matter to you, plan on adding the relevant packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW 8 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 350 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.27% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 89.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $58,522, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The current average of $59,109 sits slightly below last year's $64,435.

That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. If you plan to sell later, the same trend means you should expect resale value to remain sensitive to trim, mileage, and condition.

For a future seller, the strongest cars will likely be the ones with desirable equipment, clean history, and the right body style. Higher-spec versions may still appeal to a narrower audience, but they can also be harder to move if the market stays selective.

Is the 2023 BMW 8 Series safe?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series doesn’t have released crash test ratings from IIHS or NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The base car comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want more protection, the optional Driving Assistance Package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition, parking assist, park distance control, and a surround-view camera system. You then need the Driving Assistance Professional Package for adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic-jam assist, and active lane-keep assist.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should pay close attention to whether a used example has the right packages.

Should I buy a 2023 BMW 8 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.27% compared with last year.
• The 2023 model year adds exterior styling tweaks, an enlarged touchscreen, and more paint and wheel options.

The bottom line: If you want the updated 2023 version with a strong mix of style, performance, and market availability, this is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softened pricing to shop patiently and focus on the best-equipped example rather than stretching for a newer or more expensive trim.
