Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tundra arrives as an all-new full-size half-ton pickup, and that alone makes it distinctive. Toyota replaces the old formula with V6 engines and an available hybrid powertrain, giving the truck a more modern mechanical identity. It is offered with rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive, and buyers can choose between four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax configurations across six trim levels. That breadth of body styles and trims helps the Tundra appeal to shoppers who want a truck that can be tailored to work, family, or everyday use.
What continues to define the Tundra is its reputation for durability and value, along with a loyal owner base. The new model also brings updates in almost every area and is described as offering impressive technology. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the loss of the V8 may disappoint longtime fans, the design may be polarizing, and it is much more expensive than the 2021 model. Even so, the 2022 Toyota Tundra stands out as a major reset for Toyota’s pickup, aimed at winning over both existing loyalists and new buyers.

Best truck I've driven. Had a 07 tundra sr5 for 8 years over 300k miles. Bought this truck for cheap. Noticed it had its recall still open. O trust Toyota so just dropped it off to get the new engine put in. Saved me 25k getting a new one. This truck is a beast and now im back to 0 miles soon. Best buy ever!

The truck was nice and clean, however when driving it pulled to the right no matter where on the road I was driving. I appreciate that it had been in 2 accidents before, but as a Toyota certified used vehicle it should not have done this.

Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviews also point to reliability, dependability, and a truck that feels built for long-term ownership.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Tundra as a truck with a well-deserved reputation for durability and value, and the tech coverage notes that loyal owners often keep these trucks for hundreds of thousands of miles. Toyota also includes standard maintenance-friendly ownership support through its connected-services and safety feature coverage.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the truck’s core durability and more about paying too much for one that hasn’t been maintained or inspected carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tundra?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on condition, equipment operation, and signs of hard use, especially if you’re shopping a truck that may have been worked hard. Pay close attention to trim-specific equipment so you know whether the truck has the features you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Tundra’s trim spread ranges from work-focused to luxury-oriented, and the base SR is the one most likely to leave out the richer materials and amenities found higher up.
- Powertrain: You get a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 in standard form, while the hybrid i-Force Max adds more output and torque; both pair with a 10-speed automatic.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, full-speed range adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitor is not available on SR.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard on SR and SR5, while a 14-inch screen is standard on Limited and above and optional on SR5. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota estimates 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway/20 mpg combined for rear-wheel-drive gas models and 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined for four-wheel-drive gas models.
Which 2022 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Tundra’s new-generation hardware at the lowest starting price, but you’ll give up some of the richer cabin and tech upgrades found higher up.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the core of the lineup and can be optioned with the larger 14-inch touchscreen, giving you a strong mix of equipment and price.
- Limited: This is the smart step-up if you want the 14-inch screen standard, a more upscale feel, and access to more premium tech without jumping all the way to the luxury trims.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want a more upscale truck with higher-end tech and available head-up display content, and you’re willing to pay for it.
- 1794: This is the luxury-focused choice, and it suits you if cabin comfort and premium presentation matter more than keeping the price in check.
- TRD Pro: This is the flagship off-road-oriented trim, with FOX shocks and aluminum skid plates, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most capability-focused version.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard across the lineup, and blind-spot monitoring is standard on all trims except SR.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,348 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $39,099.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $39,085 sits slightly below last year's $42,624.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a stronger prior-year level, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck is equipped. Well-kept examples with desirable trims and strong feature content should hold buyer interest better than stripped or heavily used trucks.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard, and it includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with eight airbags, LATCH connectors on the outboard second-row seats, tire-pressure monitoring, hill-start control, drive-start control, active headrests, and parking support brake with rear cross-traffic alert.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all trims except SR, where it is not available. That means you should pay close attention to trim level if that feature matters to you.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a full redesign with new V6 powertrains, a hybrid option, and a major technology upgrade.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $38,946, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,085 average.
- It offers a familiar, straightforward truck feel with proven fundamentals.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $43,373, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,085 average.
- It largely carries forward the redesign while adding an SX appearance package for the SR5 trim.
The bottom line: If you want the biggest step forward in modern powertrain, tech, and cabin design, the 2022 is the right target. If your priority is saving a little money and you’re comfortable with older-school fundamentals, the 2021 is the value play. If you want the newer-generation truck but don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is a reasonable alternative.
