Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tundra stands out as an all-new version of Toyota’s full-size half-ton pickup, and that fresh start is a big part of its appeal. It comes with rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive, and it is offered in Double Cab and CrewMax configurations across six trim levels. For buyers who value Toyota’s long-standing reputation for durability and value, the Tundra also brings a loyal following and a broad update that touches nearly every area.
What makes this truck especially notable is the move to V6 engines and an available hybrid powertrain, along with technology that is described as impressive. It also offers multiple cab and bed lengths, which adds flexibility for different kinds of truck use. At the same time, the Tundra has some clear tradeoffs: it no longer offers a V8 engine, its design may be polarizing, and it is much more expensive than the 2021 model.

Best truck I've driven. Had a 07 tundra sr5 for 8 years over 300k miles. Bought this truck for cheap. Noticed it had its recall still open. O trust Toyota so just dropped it off to get the new engine put in. Saved me 25k getting a new one. This truck is a beast and now im back to 0 miles soon. Best buy ever!

The truck was nice and clean, however when driving it pulled to the right no matter where on the road I was driving. I appreciate that it had been in 2 accidents before, but as a Toyota certified used vehicle it should not have done this.

The main trade-offs are that current market prices are high and some shoppers may question whether the value matches the cost. With 35.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, a dependable feel, and ownership confidence over the long haul. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Toyota’s durability reputation and notes that loyal owners tend to keep these trucks for hundreds of thousands of miles, with documented examples exceeding the million-mile mark. Toyota’s standard driver-assistance and safety equipment also supports everyday dependability. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the truck’s core durability and more about paying too much for a clean example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tundra?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the powertrain, suspension, and cabin electronics, since this model year introduced a major redesign. Pay close attention to condition, because the truck’s value can vary a lot depending on trim, equipment, and overall wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR uses an 8-inch touchscreen, while SR5 can add a 14-inch screen and Limited and above get the larger display standard. Upper grades also bring more premium materials and amenities, plus a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The truck uses a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid setup raises output to 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Toyota estimates 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway/20 mpg combined for RWD gas models and 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined for 4WD gas models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitor is not available on SR and is standard on all other trim levels except SR.
- Infotainment: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models. SR and SR5 use an 8-inch touchscreen, while Limited and above get a 14-inch touchscreen standard; Toyota Connected services, Safety Connect, Service Connect, WiFi Connect, and SiriusXM are also standard with a trial period.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota estimates 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway/20 mpg combined for rear-wheel-drive gas models and 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined for four-wheel-drive gas models.
Which 2022 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the redesigned Tundra. It comes with the standard 8-inch touchscreen and the core safety suite, but it leaves you without some of the larger-screen and upscale features found higher up the range.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the core of the lineup and can add the 14-inch touchscreen. It also gives you access to more available equipment while staying below the luxury-focused grades.
- Limited: This is the sweet spot if you want the 14-inch touchscreen standard, a more premium cabin, and the stronger tech presentation without jumping all the way to the luxury trims.
- Platinum: This trim is for you if you want a more upscale truck with the higher-end digital instrument panel and available head-up display. It leans more toward comfort and technology than basic utility.
- 1794: This is the luxury-focused choice, with Toyota positioning it as the ultimate upscale truck. It suits you if cabin refinement matters more than keeping the price in check.
- TRD Pro: This is the flagship and the most specialized trim, with FOX shocks and aluminum skid plates. It is the one to choose if you want the most rugged, fully equipped version in the lineup.
Blind-spot monitor is unavailable on SR and standard on all other trim levels except SR.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tundra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,289 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $39,068, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $39,068 sits slightly below last year's $42,391.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a stronger prior-year level. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to last year’s higher pricing. The Tundra’s loyal following and broad appeal can help support demand later, especially for well-kept trucks with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard on all models and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with eight airbags, LATCH connectors on the outboard second-row seats, tire-pressure monitoring, hill-start control, drive-start control, active headrests, and parking support brake with rear cross-traffic alert. Blind-spot monitor is standard on all trim levels except SR, where it is not available.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a new powertrain, modern tech, and a much more updated full-size truck feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $38,887, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,068 average.
- It leans on proven fundamentals with a spacious cabin and good towing capacity.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $43,198, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,068 average.
- It keeps the redesigned formula and adds an SX appearance package for the SR5 trim level.
The bottom line: If you want the most modern Tundra in this price band, the 2022 is the primary target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you a little money, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer-year carryover with a small styling update.
