Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains a solid choice among compact cars, and its appeal starts with how many ways Toyota lets buyers configure it. For 2022, the Corolla is available as both a sedan and a hatchback, with manual and automatic transmissions and multiple powertrain options, including a hybrid. Toyota also gives the sedan a broad trim lineup, with L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE.
The only significant change for 2022 is the addition of two new colors: Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl. That limited update means the Corolla’s basic formula stays familiar, which suits buyers looking for a reliable and sensible compact car. Owners’ feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its dependable design, practicality, and value for money.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Corolla’s drawbacks include outdated technology, a potentially polarizing design, and sluggish performance. Even so, its combination of versatility, efficiency-minded options, and everyday usefulness helps explain why it continues to be a popular nameplate.

Overall im happy with my purchase, it was a good car at a good price, there were a minor dent in the front lip that was conviently placed to be covered by the bottom of the ad, which is misleading but not a deal breaker.

Dependable and attractive design, with practical features so there isnt a bunch of added flash that you end up paying for. Wish there were more of these cars around so the demand would go down. These are higher priced due to demand for sure.

How much does the 2022 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,488 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,149 |
| Year-Round High | $19,257 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,260 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.01% |
Prices have softened 4.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,335 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota Corolla earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and they also describe it as a solid car that feels well worth the investment. The Corolla’s broad configuration range adds to that appeal, since you can shop sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain choices. The main trade-offs are outdated technology and a sluggish driving character, with the design also being potentially polarizing.
For you, that means the Corolla makes the most sense if you want a sensible compact car that emphasizes everyday usefulness over excitement. It is especially appealing if you value versatility and efficiency-minded options more than cutting-edge tech or sporty performance. The market also shows 35.0% good or great deals, which is a decent sign that value opportunities are out there.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable design and a car that feels well worth the investment, which are both encouraging signs for used buyers who want something they can count on. The expert review also frames the Corolla as a reliable and sensible compact car, and it describes the model as a solid all-rounder with a reputation for being thrifty and easy to live with. Toyota’s three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty also support the ownership picture.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about dramatic mechanical drama and more about whether the car has been maintained well enough to preserve its everyday dependability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair work. Because the Corolla’s appeal depends heavily on its condition and value proposition, it is worth focusing on how well the car has been maintained and whether any accident history affects the specific example you are considering. If you are comparing trims, make sure the equipment level matches what you expect before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE and XSE models add more aggressive exterior styling, while the Nightshade Editions bring blacked-out trim and the Apex Editions add a subtle body kit with bronze accents and model-specific 18-inch wheels. Base trims are more restrained in appearance, so you should check whether the styling and interior presentation match your expectations.
- Powertrain: The L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, while the SE and XSE use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The 2.0-liter engine is also available with a six-speed manual on SE and SE Apex Edition models, and every 2022 Corolla is front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it is not standard on all trim levels.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard on the L, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, Amazon Alexa integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine with CVT is rated at up to 34 mpg combined, while the manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 31 mpg combined. The Corolla Hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 7 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Apex Edition, and Nightshade Edition.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla lineup and do not need the extra equipment found on higher trims.
- LE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience while staying close to the core Corolla formula.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for a better-equipped commuter.
- SE: This is the trim to target if you want the more engaging Corolla setup, including the 2.0-liter engine and a sportier look.
- XSE: Pick this if you want the most fully featured gas Corolla sedan and are willing to pay for the top-end equipment and available audio upgrade.
- Apex Edition: This is for you if you want the sportiest Corolla character, with the manual transmission available on SE Apex Edition models and a more aggressive chassis setup.
- Nightshade Edition: Choose this if styling matters most and you want the blacked-out appearance treatment without moving into the Apex’s more focused setup.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it is not standard on all trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping rather than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,335 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,149, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $18,488 sits slightly below last year's $19,260.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Corolla is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago, which can matter if you are thinking ahead to resale. If you buy at the right price now and keep the car in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The Corolla’s broad appeal also helps support future demand, especially among shoppers who want a practical compact car with a strong reputation.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it is not standard on all trim levels. One caveat is that the headlights received lower Acceptable or Marginal ratings depending on trim level.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 keeps the Corolla’s broad configuration range, including sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain options.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,026, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,488 average.
- It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging personality in SE and XSE trims.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and a wide range of configurations, the 2022 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly route and still delivers the Corolla’s core strengths.
