overall

Summary
With 154 currently listed for sale near Wichita, KS and an average price of $39,517, 50.6% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it stays true to the rugged side of the SUV formula. It may not be optimized for everyday family errands, but it can handle them, and it can also venture into places that many suburban crossovers would avoid. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps offset its old-school character.
That mix of strengths makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability over polish. Its off-road ability is a major draw, and the technology is described as easy to use with standard advanced safety features. At the same time, it comes with clear tradeoffs: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, while some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. The 4Runner also stands out for its off-road performance and easy-to-use technology, while fuel economy remains a common complaint.
That fits the 4Runner’s mission well: it is aimed at you if you value capability and utility more than polish or refinement. The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Even so, 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, durability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they can count on it for rugged use. The powertrain is described as reliable, and the truck-like setup is presented as a strength for buyers who want something dependable over the long haul.
Toyota also backs the 4Runner with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear and a hard life off pavement can matter more than the basic reputation for toughness.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, underbody condition, and signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle has seen trail duty. Pay close attention to trim-specific equipment, since the 4Runner’s value changes a lot based on how much convenience and off-road hardware you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 is the entry point and includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. The Trail Special Edition adds a cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, under-floor storage, a premium accessory cooler, and all-weather floor mats. The TRD Sport adds 20-inch alloy wheels, X-REAS performance suspension, a hood scoop, black roof rails, sport badging, and synthetic leather upholstery. The TRD Off-Road adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system. The TRD Pro adds enhanced shock absorbers, a JBL premium stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof. The Limited adds 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and X-REAS sport suspension.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is described as reliable and decent off the line, but underwhelming in most other driving situations. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with available 4WD and low range.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system are extra, and the TRD Pro also gets an off-road camera system.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and those figures are the same for rear-wheel-drive and 4WD versions.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the starting point and the best fit if you want the core 4Runner experience without paying for extras. It already gives you the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and Toyota Safety Sense P, so it covers the essentials well.
- Trail Special Edition: This is the most distinctive value play if you want extra utility and a more adventure-focused setup. The cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, under-floor storage, and accessory cooler make it appealing if you plan to use the 4Runner for trips and gear hauling.
- TRD Sport: This trim leans more toward road-oriented style and suspension tuning, with X-REAS performance suspension and 20-inch wheels. It makes sense if you want a more dressed-up 4Runner, but it is not the off-road-focused choice.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to target if you want the 4Runner’s trail hardware without jumping all the way to the top end. The locking rear differential, crawl control, skid plates, and terrain management system make it the strongest fit for buyers who actually plan to use the SUV off pavement.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most feature-rich off-road version, with enhanced shock absorbers, a JBL premium stereo, surround-view and off-road cameras, dual-zone climate control, and a moonroof. It is the right pick if you want the most hardware and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the most road-focused luxury-leaning trim, with leather, heated and ventilated front seats, parking sensors, and X-REAS sport suspension. It suits you best if comfort matters more than trail equipment.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system remain extra on lower trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,344 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,204, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,370 sits slightly below last year's $40,988.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you are thinking about selling soon. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and rugged utility helps support demand over time. Its strong owner satisfaction should also help it hold attention in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system are not standard, so you may want to prioritize a better-equipped trim if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps rugged capability, easy-to-use tech, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,039, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,370 average.
- It emphasizes rugged utility, reliability, and resale value.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,183, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,370 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and the 4Runner’s core strengths, the 2022 is the sensible default. If you are price-sensitive, the 2021 is the cheaper route into the same basic formula. If you want the newer safety equipment and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the upgrade path to consider.
