overall

Summary
With 134 currently listed for sale near Wichita, KS and an average price of $42,206, 52.2% of 2023 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still makes sense for specific buyers. It has been 13 years since Toyota last redesigned it, yet it is described as aging gracefully in most ways. Toyota has also kept its technology up to minimum standards and used new trim levels and special editions to keep interest alive. For 2023, it gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and it is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
What makes the 2023 Toyota 4Runner appealing is its mix of rugged character and everyday usability. It is fun to drive off-road, spacious, and easy to use when it comes to technology. Owners also praise its reliability, comfort, strong performance, and spacious third row. At the same time, it is not the best choice for everyone, since its safety ratings are unimpressive, its fuel economy is poor, and its on-road handling is also poor.

The Toyota 4Runner is just about perfect! The third row is an added bonus when needed. The additional safety features on the 2023 is definitely a plus for a teen driver.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

How much does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $44,356 |
| Year-Round Low | $41,413 |
| Year-Round High | $44,998 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $44,721 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.82% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 3,332 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare before buying.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, comfort, and strong performance. They also highlight the spacious third row, the easy-to-use interior layout, and the overall family-friendly feel.
The trade-offs are clear: it is not especially efficient, and its on-road handling is a weak point.
For you, that means the 4Runner makes the most sense if you value rugged character, space, and straightforward usability more than refinement.
With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, trouble-free ownership, and a vehicle people feel they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also describes it as having a reputation for legendary reliability and durability.
Toyota includes free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear and maintenance history matter more here than they would on a newer SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a documented ownership record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, maintenance history, and how the vehicle has been used. Pay close attention to condition if you plan to rely on it for daily driving rather than occasional adventure use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base setup is intentionally simple, while the 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds retro styling touches, bronze accents, and standard four-wheel drive.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard unless you choose a trim or option with four-wheel drive, and the SUV is rated to tow 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The largest touchscreen is 8 inches. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Amazon Alexa compatibility are included, and you can add navigation, connected services, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA fuel economy rating is 17 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra appearance or capability upgrades. It makes sense if you mainly want the traditional SUV formula and standard safety tech.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a version tuned more toward on-road athleticism than the base model. It adds a suspension designed to improve pavement manners.
- SR5 Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it builds on the SR5 with a more upscale feel while staying below the specialty off-road and performance models.
- TRD Off-Road: Pick this if you want the most capability-focused setup short of the TRD Pro. It adds a suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the right move if you want the off-road hardware plus a more premium experience.
- 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the style play. It adds retro stripes, bronze wheels and badging, special stitching, and standard four-wheel drive, but it is limited in paint and interior choices.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the full-time four-wheel-drive option and a more road-oriented setup.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized version, with a suspension tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,332 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $41,413, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $44,356 sits slightly below last year's $44,721.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is generally helpful if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate future value because the model is not swinging sharply up or down.
The 4Runner’s strong owner satisfaction also supports demand, especially among buyers who want a rugged SUV with a loyal following. That kind of reputation can help it hold value better than vehicles with weaker enthusiasm.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
The main caveat is that its crash-test performance trails newer rivals, especially in rollover and small-overlap testing.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and offers a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,509, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,356 average.
- It stays true to the rugged SUV formula while keeping modern infotainment and safety tech.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,911, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,356 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability and durability, but still shows its age.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year availability, standard safety upgrades, and stable pricing, the 2023 is the cleanest choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for the newer model year, the 2024 is available but not dramatically different in the ways that matter most.
