Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety features, value for the price, and performance in snowy conditions. They also like the driving experience and the rugged look, which fits the vehicle’s outdoor-focused personality. The main trade-offs are that the base engine can feel underpowered and the infotainment system can be complicated.

For you, that means this Outback makes the most sense if you want a practical, all-weather vehicle with a strong safety reputation and a more adventurous character. The market also shows 38.6% good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners highlighting safety, value, and confidence in bad weather. The expert review also emphasizes that the Outback is built around everyday usefulness and long-term practicality, especially for drivers who want a vehicle they can count on in rough conditions.

The ownership risk to watch is that some buyers may find the base powertrain and infotainment less satisfying over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any listing you like, even if the price looks attractive. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, accident repairs, and signs of hard use. Focus especially on overall condition, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Wilderness trim adds a more rugged look, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a roof rack system, and water-repellant upholstery. It also stands apart from standard versions with more aggressive bumpers, blacked-out trim, and outdoor-focused details, while the base setup lacks those adventure-oriented upgrades.
• Powertrain: The Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, plus standard all-wheel drive and a CVT. It also has a 24 mpg combined estimate and revised gearing for tougher terrain.
• Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. It also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning, while DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
• Infotainment: You get an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen, physical knobs for volume and tuning, physical temperature controls, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Voice recognition is less natural than you might want, so test the system before you buy.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 24 mpg combined, and the test route returned 21.3 mpg.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

• Deal availability: 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,320 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.14% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 84.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,456, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $23,456 sits slightly below last year's $25,536.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. If you plan to resell later, condition and mileage will matter even more because buyers will have plenty of listings to compare. Strong value perception can still support demand, especially for a model with broad appeal and a loyal following.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
