Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Legacy stands out because it combines standard all-wheel drive with a reputation for safety and everyday comfort in a midsize sedan package. Subaru’s Legacy line has long been known for making AWD a core part of the formula, and the model’s pros in this generation also point to a comfortable ride and lots of standard safety features. For buyers who want a sedan that feels secure and practical in all kinds of weather, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
For 2022, the Legacy belongs to the seventh generation, which is described as the safest and most technically advanced version of the sedan. This generation brought the return of the turbo, the standardization of the EyeSight safety suite, and the introduction of the 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system. It also rides on the Subaru Global Platform and is described as having a more spacious interior, a stiffer chassis, better ride quality, and a quieter cabin. Standard equipment includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the top two XT trims come with the turbo engine and AWD remains standard across all models.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Legacy is described as having dull styling, an interior that feels cheap, and sluggish performance. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who value standard AWD, strong safety content, and a well-rounded, comfortable driving experience over flashier design or sportier acceleration.

We bought the Legacy base model and for me its the best bang for your buck in a mid size car. 2 display screens with apple/ android auto, eye sight technology, headlights that turn with the car, the best awd system in the business, room for 5 and a vacation size trunk. Our first 2500 miles was a trip from Chicago to North Carolina through the Smokey Mountains. We averaged 31.8 mpg. A very nice car for the money

Is the 2022 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, especially for shoppers who value standard AWD, strong fuel economy, and a car they can count on day to day. The Legacy’s reputation for long-term practicality is reinforced by the way owners describe its overall satisfaction with the vehicle. For used buyers, that suggests manageable long-term ownership risk if you verify condition and maintenance history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Legacy?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, prior repairs, and any signs that the car hasn’t been maintained as expected. Focus especially on overall condition, because a used sedan with strong safety and comfort appeal is only a good buy if the individual example has been cared for properly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $20,599 sits slightly below last year's $22,458.
That softer pricing suggests the Legacy has already moved down from its earlier level, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained than on market momentum alone. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,524, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $20,599 average.
- It offers standard AWD and practical comfort with budget-friendly pricing.
The bottom line:
The 2022 is the better pick if you want the stronger current-market mix of owner satisfaction, deal availability, and accident-free inventory. If your top priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the more price-sensitive alternative and still delivers the Legacy’s core strengths.
