CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
overall

Summary
With 1,127 currently listed for sale and an average price of $63,695, 32.3% of 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
86.4% of 2022 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. Its appeal starts with a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain and continues with a choice of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580. Both versions use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, giving the car a technical and upscale character that matches its flagship mission.
Beyond the hardware, the 2022 S-Class is distinguished by its stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. Those strengths make it especially attractive to buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels polished and substantial. The tradeoff is that its design may be polarizing, and there is no getting around the high price tag, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700. Fuel economy is also mixed depending on the engine, with the S500 rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
You’re looking at a full-size four-door luxury sedan that’s built to feel polished and substantial, with a stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. It also brings a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric setup, standard all-wheel drive, and a nine-speed automatic, so it has the hardware to match its flagship mission.
The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and its high price tag. If you want executive-level comfort and a highly technical luxury sedan, this one fits that brief well.
32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, and the available information emphasizes advanced engineering, strong performance, and a highly refined cabin. Its mild-hybrid powertrains, standard all-wheel drive, and extensive driver-assistance tech point to a vehicle designed for confident daily use and long-distance comfort.
The performance setup also supports that impression: the S500 and S580 both use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic, and standard 4Matic AWD, while the chassis is described as smooth, responsive, and predictable. Mercedes also highlights the car’s executive-level safety systems and premium build quality, which are the kinds of traits you want in a long-term luxury sedan.
Mercedes notes that buyers who choose the sedan 4Matic should find little to complain about or regret, which is a reassuring sign for used-car shoppers. For you, the bigger ownership risk is less about the concept and more about making sure the specific car you buy has been well maintained and properly cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the condition of the electronics, suspension, and luxury features, since this is a highly equipped flagship sedan. You’ll also want to confirm that the car’s maintenance history matches its premium positioning.
Key things to evaluate:

- Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Both use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4Matic AWD.
- Safety package: Standard and available driver-assistance features include active distance assist Distronic adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, and Pre-Safe Impulse Side. Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line.
Here's the short version:
- S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core S-Class experience with the six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain, standard AWD, and the flagship cabin tech. It’s the best-value starting point if you want the S-Class nameplate without stretching to the pricier V8 trims.
- S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: Choose this if you want the same S500 powertrain but a sportier appearance and a more expensive presentation. It makes sense if style matters to you, but it’s not the value pick.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the step up if you want the V8 and stronger acceleration while staying in the more restrained Luxury Line trim. It suits you if performance matters more than keeping the purchase price down.
- S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: This combines the V8 with the AMG Line look, so you’re paying for both extra power and a more aggressive appearance. It’s for buyers who want the more dramatic version of the S-Class.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line: This is the top trim and the most upscale choice in the lineup. If you want the most lavish version of the 2022 S-Class, this is the one to target.
The safety content also notes executive-level upgrades for the second row, plus available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,129 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $63,177, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $63,618 sits slightly below last year's $71,148.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later.
For a future seller, the key is to buy carefully and avoid overpaying relative to the current market. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should still attract attention, but the recent price softening means you should expect resale values to remain sensitive to condition and mileage.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class gets loaded with standard and available safety and advanced driver assistance systems, with some executive-level upgrades for the second row.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes active distance assist Distronic adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, and Pre-Safe Impulse Side. The car also includes car-to-x communication and Magic Vision Control.
For rear-seat passengers, Mercedes offers available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag. That said, some of the more advanced protection features are available rather than standard, so you’ll want to confirm the exact equipment on the car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 combines a polished redesign with strong ride quality, premium materials, and standard AWD.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $59,063, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,618 average.
- Mercedes used the redesign to make the S-Class a technology showcase.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $78,185, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,618 average.
- It adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for buyers wanting a more modern setup.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the newer powertrain and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
