How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 10.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,136 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns 4.5/5 from users and 8.7/10 from expert testing. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

You’re looking at a full-size luxury sedan that’s built to feel special, with a stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. It also brings a high-tech cabin and a refined powertrain lineup, so it fits well if you want executive-level comfort with modern features.

The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag. Even so, 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, and its appeal centers on refinement, advanced technology, and a deeply luxurious cabin. The mild-hybrid setup and standard all-wheel drive support smooth, confident everyday use, while the expert evaluation highlights strong performance and a polished driving experience.

Its powertrain is described as seamless and responsive, with the electric assist adding useful torque during acceleration. The cabin materials and assembly also reinforce the sense that this is a carefully built luxury car.

If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is paying flagship-car money for a vehicle whose upkeep and complexity can be substantial.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any listing you’re considering, even if the car appears clean on paper. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, suspension, and all driver-assistance functions, since this model leans heavily on advanced systems. Focus on overall condition as much as mileage, because luxury features and materials can be expensive to sort out later.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S500 and S580 are the two core trims, and the S500 is the better-value choice if you want the flagship experience without stepping up to the more expensive V8 model. The S580 adds more power, but the base S500 already delivers the upscale design, premium materials, and high-tech cabin that define the car.
• Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid setup, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Both pair with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard and available driver assistance features include active distance assist Distronic with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX infotainment system, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The tech suite also includes standard augmented video for navigation and a standard Burmester 3D Surround sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan and S580 4Matic Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• S500 4Matic Sedan: This is the best-value choice if you want the core S-Class experience. It gives you the turbocharged inline-six mild-hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, and the same flagship luxury feel that defines the model, while avoiding the higher cost of the V8.
• S580 4Matic Sedan: Choose this if you want the stronger twin-turbo V8 and are willing to pay more for extra performance. It keeps the same luxury mission and standard AWD, but it’s the pricier route.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, with standard and available driver-assistance features that make the S-Class especially well equipped.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,136 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.96% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $61,895, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $61,908 sits slightly below last year's $69,525.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, the softer pricing means resale upside may be more limited than it was a year ago, especially if the car is heavily optioned or has higher mileage.

Even so, the S-Class remains a flagship luxury sedan with strong appeal, and well-kept examples should continue to attract attention from shoppers who want premium comfort and technology. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mercedes-Benz equips it with a long list of standard and available driver-assistance features, including active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assistant, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus, Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Magic Vision Control is also standard.

The safety setup is especially comprehensive, and the available rear-passenger airbags and rear-seat belt bag add an executive-level layer of protection for passengers in back.

Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.96% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 combines a refined mild-hybrid powertrain, standard AWD, and a high-tech luxury cabin.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $57,780, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $61,908 average.
• It brings a major redesign with new powertrains and updated infotainment.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $76,740, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $61,908 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain and more electric-driving capability.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer plug-in hybrid setup.
