How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 11.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,131 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing trims and conditions.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

It’s built to deliver a deeply luxurious executive-sedan experience, with a stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. The cabin and tech presentation are central to its appeal, and the standard all-wheel-drive mild-hybrid setup reinforces its upscale, high-tech character.

The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag.

Only 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop carefully to find the strongest value.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, and its focus on refinement, advanced technology, and premium materials supports that reputation. Its mild-hybrid powertrain and standard all-wheel drive also point to a well-integrated, modern mechanical package.

The performance notes emphasize smooth, predictable handling and strong braking, which are good signs for everyday usability over time. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that buyers who choose the sedan 4Matic should find little to complain about or regret.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a highly complex luxury sedan can be expensive to maintain if prior care was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, ride quality, and any signs of uneven wear or prior repair work. On a flagship luxury sedan like this, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S-Class comes off a complete makeover and is presented as a sleek, high-end flagship with a 12.8-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The cabin materials are a major strength, so base-trim equipment gaps matter less than overall condition and how well the car was optioned.
• Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid setup with EQ Boost, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with the same system. Both pair with a nine-speed automatic and standard 4Matic AWD, and the S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Standard and available driver assistance features include active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available.
• Infotainment: The S-Class uses a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX infotainment system, plus a 12.3-inch LED virtual instrument panel. Standard augmented video for navigation is included, and an available augmented reality head-up display adds another layer of guidance.
• Fuel efficiency: The S500 can achieve up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S500 4Matic Luxury Line, S500 4Matic AMG Line, S580 4Matic Luxury Line, S580 4Matic AMG Line.

Here's the short version:

• S500 4Matic Luxury Line: This is the least expensive entry point and the best-value trim if you want the S-Class experience without stretching to the V8. It gives you the flagship cabin, standard AWD, and the mild-hybrid six-cylinder setup.
• S500 4Matic AMG Line: Choose this if you want the S500’s balance of performance and efficiency with a sportier appearance and a more aggressive presentation. It’s the better pick if you care about style but still want to keep costs below the V8 models.
• S580 4Matic Luxury Line: This is the right choice if you want the stronger V8 powertrain and the most traditional luxury-sedan feel. It suits you best if smooth, effortless acceleration matters more than price.
• S580 4Matic AMG Line: Pick this if you want the V8 plus the sportier AMG treatment. It’s the most expressive version in the standard lineup, but it also pushes you further up the price ladder.

The safety content emphasizes a broad standard and available driver-assistance suite, so even the lower trims are well equipped.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,131 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.42% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 87.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $61,837, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $61,837 sits slightly below last year's $69,806.

That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more price sensitivity than before. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher.

The S-Class still benefits from flagship status, strong luxury appeal, and a reputation for advanced technology. Those traits can help support demand later, especially if the car is well maintained and properly documented.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mercedes-Benz equips the S-Class with a wide range of standard and available driver-assistance features, including active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication.

Magic Vision Control is also standard, and rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available for added executive-row protection. The safety package is broad, but some of the more advanced features are still trim- or option-dependent.

Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a redesigned flagship cabin with standard AWD and a mild-hybrid six-cylinder or V8 powertrain.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $57,558, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $61,837 average.
• The redesign brought major tech and powertrain updates.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $76,872, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $61,837 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain and electric-range capability.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around choice if you want the latest non-plug-in version of the redesigned S-Class at a softer used price. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while still delivering the same generation’s core luxury and technology.
