Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. Its appeal starts with a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain and continues with the kind of upscale execution buyers expect from the S-Class name, including premium interior materials and a stylish design. It is also positioned as a serious luxury flagship rather than a compromise, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable choice in the segment.
Mechanically, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580, both paired with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The EPA estimates for the S500 reach up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Buyers also get a great ride quality, but the design may be polarizing and the high price tag is hard to ignore, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It is positioned as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation, and the data backs up that mission with premium interior materials, a stylish design, and a strong ride quality. The powertrain lineup also supports that role, with a turbocharged inline-six in the S500 and a twin-turbo V8 in the S580, both paired with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.
The main trade-offs are straightforward: the design may be polarizing, and the high price tag is hard to ignore. For you, that means the S-Class makes the most sense if you want a flagship luxury sedan that prioritizes refinement, technology, and presence over value shopping.
31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The S-Class is built around Mercedes-Benz’s flagship-sedan formula, with premium materials, a refined cabin, and a powertrain setup designed for smooth, seamless operation. The mild-hybrid system adds electric assistance during acceleration, which helps the car feel responsive without sacrificing composure. Mercedes also positions the car as a showcase for advanced engineering, which supports confidence in how thoroughly it was developed.
The performance notes point to a surprisingly quick, flat, and predictable sedan, and the cost-effectiveness notes suggest buyers who choose the 4Matic sedan should find little to complain about or regret. If you buy used, your main long-term risk is paying flagship-car ownership costs for a vehicle that was engineered to a very high standard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, suspension, and interior features, since this is a technology-heavy luxury sedan. Focus on overall condition, because the S-Class is the kind of car where wear, missing equipment, or deferred maintenance can matter more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Luxury Line and AMG Line are both mentioned, and the S580 also adds an Executive Line. The base setup is the most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about the full luxury experience.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580, both with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The S500 is the efficiency play, while the S580 trades fuel economy for stronger performance.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, parking assist, Pre-Safe systems, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available, so check whether the car you’re considering has the rear-seat protection you want.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX system, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned, but augmented video for navigation is standard and an augmented reality head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 3 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, and S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line gives you the core S-Class experience, but it is the most likely starting point if you want to keep costs down while still getting the flagship sedan’s standard luxury and safety equipment.
- Sweet-spot trim: The S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line is the best value if you want a more upscale appearance and a richer equipment mix without jumping to the pricier V8.
- Premium/top trim: The S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line is the choice if you want the stronger V8 powertrain and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but rear-passenger airbags and the rear-seat belt bag are available, so confirm those features if second-row protection matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,104 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $63,442.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $63,409 sits slightly below last year's $71,550.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should expect the car to compete on condition, equipment, and history rather than on model-year scarcity alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still attract attention, but you should not assume the badge alone will protect value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes-Benz loads the S-Class with a long list of standard and available driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, parking assist, Pre-Safe systems, and car-to-x communication. Magic Vision Control is also standard, and rear-passenger airbags plus a rear-seat belt bag are available for executive-style second-row protection.
The main safety caveat is that some of the most desirable protection features are not universal, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example. If you want the most complete safety setup, pay close attention to whether the car includes the available rear-seat protection items.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a mild-hybrid powertrain, premium materials, and a strong ride in a flagship luxury sedan.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $60,793, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,409 average.
- It brings a redesigned flagship with new powertrains and a more sophisticated infotainment system.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $78,356, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,409 average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain with impressive electric range.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want newer efficiency tech and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
