CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 156 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $23,971, 34.0% of 2022 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda CX-5 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 stands out because Mazda has pushed it further toward premium territory, and the result is a compact SUV that feels more upscale than its mainstream badge might suggest. Its stylish design and fun-to-drive character are central to its appeal, and Mazda’s broader investment in design and engineering gives that premium ambition some substance. For shoppers who want a vehicle that looks polished and drives with more personality than many rivals, the CX-5 makes a strong case.
That appeal is reinforced by the turbocharged versions, which the source says compare favorably with similarly priced luxury crossovers such as the Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. It also earns great safety ratings, which adds to its family-friendly credentials. At the same time, the CX-5 is not without compromises: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and its technology can be unintuitive.

Mazda CX5 Kuro is great car and well appointed.Only one feature missing compared to my CX9 GT, that I traded, and that's Heads Up Display. Needed something a bit smaller and this car fits exactly and has the same high quality finishes .

How much does the 2022 Mazda CX-5 cost?

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,162 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,165 |
| Year-Round High | $25,456 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,455 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.08% |
Prices have softened 5.08% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,102 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its affordability, smooth ride, and excellent safety features, and many also call out the comfortable interior and strong turbo performance. The overview also points to a polished design and a fun-to-drive character, which helps explain why it appeals to shoppers who want something more upscale than a typical compact SUV.
The trade-offs are clear, though: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the technology can be unintuitive. Even so, the CX-5’s premium feel and family-friendly safety credentials make it a compelling choice if you value driving enjoyment and quality over maximum space or the easiest infotainment setup.
With 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a vehicle that feels affordable, smooth, comfortable, and safe, which are all traits that usually support confidence in daily use. The review summary also highlights the turbo model’s strong performance, suggesting that owners feel the CX-5 delivers more than just basic transportation.
The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of dependability by describing the CX-5 as quieter, smoother, and more composed after its updates, with improved driving dynamics and added structural rigidity. It also notes that the revised suspension tuning helps the SUV feel more settled and trustworthy on the road.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and still feels tight, quiet, and free of wear-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a used SUV like this, because you want to confirm that the ride, brakes, electronics, and interior condition all match the seller’s description. Focus on the back seat, cargo area, and infotainment usability, since those are the areas where this model’s compromises are most likely to show up in everyday use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base CX-5 2.5 S gives you the core upscale look and feel, but the higher trims add more premium touches, with the Signature standing out for its luxurious interior materials and body-color lower exterior trim.
- Powertrain: The CX-5 2.5 S uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5 Turbo brings much stronger output and standard all-wheel drive.
- Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims add adaptive headlights, and the Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, text-messaging support, E911 automatic emergency notification, and Mazda Connected Services. The system is not touch-sensing, and voice recognition is not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5 S returns 26 mpg in combined driving, while the 2.5 Turbo is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Signature, and base.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price, but you give up the richer equipment and premium touches found higher up the range.
- Select: This is the first step up if you want a better-equipped daily driver without jumping too far in price.
- Preferred: This trim is a sensible middle ground if you want more comfort and convenience without chasing luxury features.
- Carbon Edition: This is the best-value style-and-features pick if you want a more distinctive look without going all the way to the top trims.
- Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the stronger feature mix, including the 10-speaker Bose sound system and SiriusXM satellite radio.
- Premium Plus: This is the best-value choice if you want a more complete premium experience and the added drive-mode capability.
- Signature: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious cabin and the fullest safety and driver-assistance equipment.
- base: The turbo base trim is the one to choose if you want the stronger engine and are willing to pay for it.
The standard i-Activsense safety package is comprehensive across the lineup, while the Signature gets the extra safety hardware that sets it apart.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,102 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.08% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,165, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $24,162 sits slightly below last year's $25,455.
That price movement suggests the CX-5 has softened enough to create a better buying opportunity now, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy at a favorable price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later when you resell.
The model’s strong safety reputation, premium feel, and high owner satisfaction should help keep demand healthy. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims add adaptive headlights, and the Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
That combination makes the CX-5 especially appealing if safety is high on your list, though you should note that some of the more advanced features are reserved for the top trim.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.08% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a more premium feel, stronger driving dynamics, and excellent safety ratings.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,151, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,162 average.
- It offers strong value with tech updates and a practical family focus.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,926, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,162 average.
- It is a largely carryover model with a fresh paint option and familiar strengths.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and premium feel, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the smarter value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer model year and are comfortable paying more for essentially the same formula.
