What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Lexus IS?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether the premium features still work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the IS 300, IS 350 F Sport, and IS 500 F Sport Performance. The IS 500 F Sport Performance adds a more dramatic performance character, while the IS 350 F Sport is described as a satisfying sports sedan in its own right. Premium trim adds triple-beam headlights, a navigation system, a surround-view monitoring system, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium sound system, and a power rear window shade.
• Powertrain: The IS 500 F Sport Performance uses a normally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 with 472 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Lexus says the formula is essentially more power, and the car also includes a limited-slip differential and multiple drive modes.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on all 2022 IS models. It includes a wide range of driving assistance, collision warning, and collision-prevention technologies, along with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. Some functions can be overly aggressive in certain situations.
• Infotainment: Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Premium trim adds a 10.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert notes say the IS 500 averaged 17.7 mpg during evaluation and fell short of its official 20 mpg combined rating.

Which 2022 Lexus IS trim should I buy?

The 2022 Lexus IS is offered in 3 trim levels: IS 300, IS 350 F Sport, IS 500 F Sport Performance.

Here's the short version:

• IS 300: This is the entry point if you want the Lexus IS experience at the lowest price, but the expert notes make clear that the more powerful versions are the ones that really define the car’s enthusiast appeal.
• IS 350 F Sport: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it is described as a satisfying sports sedan in its own right, with a strong balance of performance and everyday livability.
• IS 500 F Sport Performance: This is the pick if you want the most dramatic version of the IS, with the 5.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, and the most emotional driving character in the lineup.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Lexus IS?

It looks like a buyer’s market if you’re shopping carefully, because pricing and inventory both give you room to negotiate.

• Deal availability: 40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 851 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.89% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $36,863, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Lexus IS's resale value?

The current average of $36,863 sits slightly below last year's $37,961.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. Strong demand for well-kept examples should also help support values, especially for cars with desirable equipment and clean history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Lexus IS safe?

The 2022 Lexus IS earns the highest overall rating of “Top Safety Pick+” from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA. It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in rollover and all other NHTSA tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on all 2022 IS models. It includes a wide range of driving assistance, collision warning, and collision-prevention technologies, and the expert notes specifically call out lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, and low-speed automatic braking. The same testing also found that some systems can react too aggressively in tighter curves or heavy city traffic, so you should pay attention to how the car behaves on your normal routes.

Should I buy a 2022 Lexus IS or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 lineup adds the IS 500 F Sport Performance, bringing a 5.0-liter V8 and a major performance boost.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $33,881, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $36,863 average.
• It marks the start of the fourth generation and focuses on style and driving enjoyment.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger performance story and a healthier used-car market, the 2022 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path.
