How much does the 2022 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Prices have softened 8.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,973 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Sonatas to compare.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.8/5 user-rated car with an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

The 2022 Sonata stands out as a value-focused midsize sedan with a quiet cabin, strong quality, and an outstanding warranty. It also offers a surprisingly sporty N Line variant if you want a more engaging drive.

The main trade-offs are its polarizing design and the fact that all-wheel drive is not available. If you want a well-equipped sedan that leans into value and everyday livability, the Sonata fits that brief well.

Good and great deals account for 31.9% of listings, which suggests you can still find competitive pricing in the market.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Sonata’s reliability case is helped by its strong quality focus, excellent warranty coverage, and calm, competent everyday behavior. It is described as a car that delivers exceptional value while remaining quiet and well put together.

Its powertrains are straightforward and the cabin is tuned for smooth, low-stress use, which supports confidence for daily ownership. Hyundai also includes three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, which adds a useful ownership perk.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly and hasn’t been worn down by higher-mileage use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping for a higher-trim car with more equipment to check. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re buying.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gives you a strong safety and value foundation, while higher trims add more comfort, tech, and convenience features. The biggest gaps are in equipment, not core usability.
• Powertrain: The Sonata uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder on the lower trims, a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder on SEL Plus and Limited, and a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter on the N Line. Efficiency is strongest on the lower-output trims, while the N Line trades economy for performance.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
• Infotainment: Base models get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. Hyundai also adds Highway Driving Assist on select trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg on the SE to 27 mpg on the N Line, with the SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited at 31 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and a strong standard safety and tech package. It gives you the essentials without pushing the price up.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds useful comfort and safety upgrades, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, and Blue Link connected services.
• SEL Plus: This trim is the right step up if you want more luxury and tech, including the larger touchscreen, Bose audio, wireless charging, and Highway Drive Assist.
• Limited: This is the pick if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including ventilated front seats, a head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the sportiest Sonata, with the 290-hp turbo engine, sport suspension, tuned exhaust, and unique styling and cabin details.
• N Line Night Edition: This is for buyers who want the N Line’s performance and an even more aggressive appearance package with darker exterior accents and unique wheels.

The SEL trim gets the most meaningful safety upgrades over the base model, so it’s the one to watch if safety equipment matters most.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,973 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.62% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,330, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $19,330 sits slightly below last year's $21,153.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, the softer market means you may not see rapid appreciation, so condition and trim choice matter more.

The good news is that the Sonata’s strong value story and broad appeal can help support demand over time. Well-equipped examples with desirable features should be easier to market than stripped-down cars.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in front crash protection and five-star ratings in side crash protection and rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.

One caveat is that the IIHS has not rated this model year directly, so you should lean on the standard equipment list and the NHTSA results when evaluating safety.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.62% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, an outstanding warranty, and a sporty N Line option.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,812, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,330 average.
• It emphasizes on-pavement performance while still keeping passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall used-market balance, the 2022 is the better target because it offers solid deal availability, a lower average price than last year, and strong satisfaction. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path.
