The Ford Transit is the best-selling commercial van on the market today, and it offers a huge variety of customization and configuration options. The Transit is available as a cargo van, a passenger van, and a crew van, which is the version we’ll focus on here. The 2022 Ford Transit Crew combines passenger- and cargo-hauling capabilities.

Powertrain choices from the 2021 model year remain unchanged for 2022. They include a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 275 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 rated at 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. A ten-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive (RWD) are standard; all-wheel drive (AWD) can be optioned in. Ford is also launching the electric E-Transit for 2022, but only in cargo, cutaway, and chassis-cab configurations.

Highlights of the Transit Crew include five-passenger seating with front-row buckets and a second-row bench. The configuration leaves the van’s rear cargo area open for carrying large loads. Ford offers the Sync 3 infotainment system and a 4-inch touchscreen on gasoline Transit vans, while the E-Transit gets the newer Sync 4 system with a 12-inch display, SiriusXM radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more. It’s likely only a matter of time until other Transit models get that upgrade as well.

Overlanding and #vanlife are exceptionally popular right now, so in late 2020, Ford announced new upfit options for the Transit that included an Adventure Prep Package. Among its features are AWD, the more powerful turbocharged engine, adaptive cruise control, reverse and side-sensing systems, and blind spot monitoring. Tinted glass and a heavy-duty front axle round out the package, which sets the Transit up for overlanding success.

Several other upfits are also offered. They include a Motorhome Prep Package and an RV Prep Package. Ford says that more than half of all motorhomes sold in the U.S. are built on its chassis, so it’s only logical that the automaker would offer options to convert the van to either a motorhome or an RV.

The 2022 Ford Transit goes on sale in late 2021.
