Overview
The Ford Transit Crew is a full-size van with dedicated space for passengers and cargo, much like versions of the Chevrolet Express, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Nissan NV, and Ram ProMaster. For the 2021 model year, Ford gives it some updates.
The Transit Crew offers seating for up to five, with a sliding side door and a 50/50-hinged rear door. You can choose between Low Roof, Medium Roof, and High Roof variants, and in Regular, Long, and Extended lengths. These offer between 280.9 and 536.4 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume.
Engine choices consist of either a 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6 with 275 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque or a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 310 hp and 400 lb-ft. Both engines come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. While rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional on either engine. There are also several gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) payload packages that range between 8,670 and 10,360 pounds.
All Transit Crews come standard with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, running boards, power-adjustable mirrors, roof marker lamps, air conditioning, a 12-volt power point, an AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth, USB ports, and a 4-inch multi-function display. An Exterior Upgrade Package tacks on chrome-trimmed automatic halogen headlights, a chrome grille surround, and silver wheel covers. Running boards, long-arm side mirrors, remote start, HID headlights, power front seats, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, privacy glass, and an auxiliary heater are yet more options. New for 2021 is an Adventure Prep Package, bundling the turbocharged engine, driver-assist features, the 8-inch infotainment system, privacy glass, dual USB ports, and dual absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries.
The Transit Crew offers a surprising amount of safety features for a commercial vehicle. Standard features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, post-collision braking, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, front- and rear-view split cameras, and active park assist are available.
Ford’s Transit Crew remains among the most competent in its class.
