Who Makes Ford Cars?

Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, in 1903 and it soon expanded to become the major player in the automotive industry it remains to this day. Although it has always been based in Michigan, Ford has designed, built and sold cars all over the world since its early days. In addition to its US factories, Ford currently has production plants in countries including Argentina, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

Ford has owned luxury brand Lincoln since 1922, while its Mercury sub-brand sold cars between 1939 and 2011. Ford previously owned Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo in the 1990s and 2000s but has no connection with them today. Ford has collaborated with various other car brands throughout its history, co-developing many models with Mazda (which it then part-owned) between 1979 and 2015. It collaborated with Nissan and Fiat on models during the 2000s, while the latest examples of a long-running tie-up with Volkswagen are a number of related commercial and EV models for the European market.

What Sort of Vehicles Does Ford Make?

Ford has made some iconic sedan, coupe and convertible models over the years, but these days its US lineup has been pared back to what it's best-known for – big-selling trucks and SUVs and the legendary Ford Mustang.

In ascending order of price, the new SUV models that Ford currently sells are the Escape, Bronco Sport, Bronco, Edge, Mustang Mach-E and Expedition. The current truck lineup consists of Maverick, Ranger, F150 and Super Duty models. Ford sells a range of commercial and van models, including Transit, F150 and Super Duty models with various cab and chassis combinations. The Mustang remains a halo car for the brand – as ever it’s an iconic yet accessible muscle car, available in fastback or convertible form and in varying degrees of sportiness. Ford’s only pure-electric models – for now – are the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit; hybrid powertrains are available for the Escape, F-150 and Maverick.

Ford continues to sell a huge variety of cars in other markets; SUVs are a major focus but it also offers hatchback, minivan, sedan and wagon models.
