Ford may be the undisputed king of pickup trucks, but it’s also at the top of the commercial van world with the Transit. The automaker’s smaller offering in the space, the Transit Connect, brings many of the larger van’s features to a more manageable package. Ford offers the 2022 Transit Connect in three trims and two configurations. Trims include XL, XLT, and Titanium. The Transit Connect can also be configured as a cargo van or passenger wagon, though the top Titanium model is only available as a passenger carrier. The Transit Connect is available with two engine choices: a 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 162 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque or a 2.5-liter inline-four that produces 169 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. The Transit Connect gets an eight-speed or a six-speed automatic transmission, depending on engine choice. Versions of the Transit Connect can be ordered with a short or long wheelbase, dual sliding doors with a rear liftgate, or dual sliding doors with rear swing-out cargo doors. Various glass and exterior body features can be optioned in as well. Standard interior features are generous, but some of them may surprise non-commercial buyers. Vinyl seats are standard, which makes them great for rough-and-tumble worksite use but less attractive for family road trips. There are, however, other features that go above and beyond the stripped-out work vehicle mentality. Ford gives every Transit Connect air conditioning, power windows and door locks, and large side mirrors to help minimize blind spots. The van comes standard with forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. However, the Transit Connect is not outfitted with other standard features that everyday buyers may expect in a van. The top Titanium trim brings some creature comforts, such as leather seating and navigation. It’s also equipped with HID headlights and 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Ford offers several "upfits" for the Transit Connect that make it more suitable for use by a variety of tradespeople. The automaker’s upfit configurator allows buyers to select racks and bins, partitions, ladder and tool holders, telematics, custom graphics, and more. Some versions of the van can also be converted to run on compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas.
