The F-450 is Ford’s top dog Super Duty truck, and it’s likely the most capable vehicle on many dealers’ lots today. It’s getting a full overhaul for 2023 with more power and a new design, so Ford didn’t give the F-450 many updates for 2022.

The truck is available in several configurations, including XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. Three cabs are on offer: Regular, SuperCab, and Crew Cab, and Ford offers a 6.75-foot or 8-foot bed for the truck. Buyers needing even more capability can step up to the F-450 for dual rear wheels, which bring the ability to set up a fifth-wheel towing system.

The base powertrain is a 6.2-liter gas V8 that makes 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. A 7.3-liter gas V8 is available that produces 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. At the top end of the engine line is a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 that cranks out 475 horsepower and a massive 1,050 pound-feet of torque. A ten-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear or all four wheels.

Towing and hauling are the main reasons to buy an F-450, and it delivers on all fronts. With a regular cab, the truck can haul up to 6,210 pounds. Towing extends up to 37,000 lbs for specific configurations, but people towing loads of extreme sizes should be aware that they may need endorsements or a Class A driver’s license to pull the weight on public roads.

The base 2022 F-450 XL gets vinyl upholstery and bare floors with no carpeting, but higher trim levels are far more luxurious. Cloth upholstery and a real touchscreen become standard with the XLT trim, and the Lariat model adds leather upholstery. The Crew Cab model is the most spacious in the F-450 lineup, with roomy seating for up to five passengers, but all models offer good passenger and small-item storage space.

The XL model lacks a touchscreen, but the XLT gets an 8-inch display that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, and more are standard. The Lariat trim brings a B&O sound system, and the Platinum adds a wireless charging pad. Most F-450 models get generous interior power fixtures, including two 100-volt outlets and multiple USB ports. Top trims step up to a 12-inch display with the capability to run two apps side by side. Both displays come with Ford’s excellent Sync 4 infotainment software, which brings over-the-air (OTA) updates and an extremely intuitive interface that makes interacting with the truck a breeze.

The least expensive 2022 Ford F-450 is the XL trim with a single cab and dual rear wheels. It starts at $56,625 before taxes, options, and destination. The top F-450 Limited, meanwhile, starts near six-figure territory, and it can easily crest the $100,000 mark with a few options and accessories.
