It’s official: electric vehicles (EVs) are here to stay. We’ve seen several consumer-oriented brands make the jump, but Ford is first in with a volume commercial EV, in the form of its 2022 E-Transit. The E-Transit combines the utility of Ford’s Transit line of cargo vans with full electric power. Ford essentially treats the E-Transit like a powertrain option on the regular Transit Cargo. As such, it’s available in the same three roof heights, multiple lengths, and chassis-cab and cutaway models. It also doesn’t give up any space versus its gas-powered counterparts, offering as many as 487.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row in cargo format. The E-Transit pairs a rear-mounted electric motor with a 67-kilowatt-hour battery for 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Ford estimates the range at 126 miles in the low-roof cargo variant, along with a maximum payload of 3,800 lbs for cargo variants, and 4,290 for cutaway versions. The other benefit to the electric powertrain is that it allows the E-Transit to turn itself into a mobile generator for tools and equipment. Charging-wise, a 120-volt charger is standard, but you can also use a 240-volt setup. Both AC and DC fast charging is supported, with the ability to add as many as 45 miles of range in 15 minutes. There’s also plenty of tech on the E-Transit. It starts with a standard 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, as well as over-the-air updates. When the Ford Commercial Solutions telematics system is activated, you get enhancements and logistics management specifically designed for electric and commercial vehicles, like central billing for public charging stations. Safety-wise, the E-Transit comes standard with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. That bundles forward-collision warning, automatic front emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a rear-view camera. You can add blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera system, and automatic rear emergency braking. Commercial vehicles typically aren’t tested for crashworthiness, and the E-Transit is no exception, so no public crash data is available. The E-Transit offers a connected, efficient, and zero-emissions option for in-town commercial needs.
