CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW M3
Summary
With 237 currently listed for sale and an average price of $71,918, 31.2% of 2022 BMW M3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW M3 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW M3 stands out as a high-performance sedan that still manages to be practical enough for everyday use. BMW gave it a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, and the standard six-speed manual version sends 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. That setup can get the car to 60 mph in just over four seconds, which helps explain why the M3 remains such a compelling choice for driving enthusiasts.
For buyers who want more performance, the M3 Competition raises output to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft, though it requires the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. In 2022, BMW also began offering the M3 Competition xDrive with all-wheel drive, including a rear-drive-only setting for track use. The car’s controversial grille design may not appeal to everyone, and BMW’s electric-assist steering still draws criticism, but the chassis delivers the kind of acceleration, cornering, and daily usability that define the M3 name.
The 2022 M3 is also appealing because it comes only as a sedan with seating for five and a roomy 16.9-cubic-foot trunk. BMW offered a generous amount of equipment, along with upgrades for comfort, convenience, safety, and performance, so buyers could tailor the car to their preferences. Used examples have held their value well, but the M3’s strong performance and desirability mean shoppers should still pay close attention to mileage, condition, and maintenance history.

Honestly for the money...theres no better car out there! AWD, 500hp, 500lbs of torque, 4 seats...great interior and drives like a dream. I had the option to move onto another vehicle after my previous 22 M3 was totaled, i looked at mercedes or audi or cadillac but came back the M3! The only car i would consider is the M3 Touring Wagon that they opted to not release in the US :(

The G80 M3 has been nothing short of controversial since we first laid eyes on it in 2020. While the appearance is rather polarizing what really matters is the experience you have behind the wheel and let me tell you it is a good one. The G80 M3 offers the most refined driving experience of any 3 Series to date. The I6 feels more reminiscent of an American V8 due to the large torque figures this M3 produces, but dont think for a second that the M3 has become all about power and nothing else like the AMG cars of the 2000s. The M3 does everything you want it to and so much more. If you do not care about the internet boys complaints about this cars appearance who have never actually driven one, then I guarantee buying one of these M3s would be one of the best purchases of your life.

Is the 2022 BMW M3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW M3 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. The overview frames it as a high-performance sedan that still works for everyday use, with a roomy trunk and seating for five, so you get performance without giving up practicality. It also highlights broad equipment availability, letting you tailor the car toward comfort, convenience, safety, or performance. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW M3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview suggests a car that balances serious performance with everyday usability, and it specifically points you toward paying attention to mileage, condition, and maintenance history. For a used buyer, that means the biggest long-term ownership risk is likely tied to how well the car was cared for rather than to the model’s basic appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW M3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a clean history report and confirm that the car’s maintenance records match its mileage and performance use. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on overall condition, because a high-performance sedan like this can hide expensive wear if you only shop by price.

What is the 2022 BMW M3's resale value?
The current average of $71,656 sits slightly below last year's $76,745.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well you preserve the car. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance documented, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell. Strong condition and a clean history matter especially in a performance sedan market where buyers are cautious.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW M3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $69,272, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $71,656 average.
- It feels calmer in daily driving while still delivering serious performance.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $81,421, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $71,656 average.
- It adds a more polished, versatile mix of performance and luxury.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around pick if you want strong performance, everyday usability, and a market that has softened enough to create some opportunity. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want a newer-feeling, more refined experience and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
