The BMW M3 has long been the gold standard compact performance/luxury car. Though it has grown through the years (and become exclusively a sedan), it retains that artful blend of thrilling driving dynamics and premium refinement that has made it so popular. The standard M3 was redesigned for the 2021 model year, sporting a polarizing new grille. BMW is also introducing a more powerful Competition version as a 2022 model.
Behind the newly-elongated grates, a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six makes 473 horsepower in the standard M3, and 503 hp in the M3 Competition model. Buyers can select a six-speed manual or eight-speed M Sport automatic transmission. Power is routed to the rear wheels or—for the first time in an M3—available all-wheel drive (AWD).
The AWD M3 Competition can hit 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.4 seconds, according to BMW. The AWD system is capable of being run in pure rear-wheel drive (RWD) mode in case you want the more traditional M3 driving experience. The 2022 M3 returns an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
The M3 provides a fully digital instrument panel and is available with a head-up display that projects critical driver information. The M3 comes standard with leather upholstery, adorned with multiple M badges throughout. Other standard features include heated and power-adjustable front seats, multi-zone climate control, and the latest iteration of BMW iDrive with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The M3 can also be had with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as BMW’s clever gesture control system.
Standard safety features include forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and front-and-rear parking sensors.
The 2022 BMW M3 starts at $70,895. The M3 Competition starts at $77,895. Both prices include destination.
