Used 2021 Volvo XC90 for Sale near Wisconsin

How much does the 2021 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 15.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,031 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

It stands out as Volvo’s flagship SUV, with a premium cabin, distinctive styling, and a safety-first identity that feels upscale rather than clinical. The XC90 is strongest if you want a polished three-row luxury SUV with a refined road feel and a strong emphasis on safety.

The trade-offs are real: the third row is cramped, performance can feel sluggish, and the cabin lacks USB-C ports.

Good and great deals account for 36.2% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s current-generation design has been around long enough to prove itself, and Volvo’s emphasis on safety and refinement supports its reputation as a durable family SUV. Its powertrains and cabin tech are established rather than experimental, which can be reassuring when you’re shopping used.

The plug-in hybrid adds more complexity than the gas models, so long-term ownership risk is lower if you prioritize a simpler configuration.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a documented accident check. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin electronics, suspension feel, and overall condition, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Pay close attention to how the third row, infotainment, and driver-assistance features operate in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum is the base model and does not get the extra visual flair of the R-Design or Inscription, while the Inscription adds the most upscale presentation with extra chrome and available 21-inch wheels. The R-Design leans sportier with a gloss-black grille surround and 20-inch wheels. If you want the best value, the midlevel R-Design balances style and equipment without jumping to the top trim.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic in all versions. The T5 is turbocharged, the T6 adds supercharging, and the T8 plug-in hybrid adds electric assist with the highest output. The T5 is front-wheel drive with optional AWD, while the T6 and T8 are AWD.
• Safety package: Volvo’s standard suite includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and Pilot Assist. Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, though the lane-centering function can struggle on gentle highway curves. The plug-in hybrid does not have updated IIHS ratings.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Two front USB-A ports and two rear USB-C ports are standard, and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system and head-up display are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The base FWD T5 is rated at 25 mpg combined, the AWD T5 at 23 mpg combined, and the AWD T6 at 22 mpg combined. The T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid is rated at 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode and offers up to 18 miles of all-electric range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core strengths without the extra visual upgrades of the higher trims. It makes sense if you want the XC90’s safety, cabin quality, and overall character at the lowest starting point.
• R-Design: This trim adds a sportier look with a gloss-black grille surround and 20-inch wheels. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more distinctive appearance without going all the way to the top trim.
• Inscription: This is the flashiest version, with extra chrome trim and available 21-inch wheels. Choose it if you want the most upscale presentation and are willing to pay for it.

For safety, the non-hybrid XC90 models earned the strongest IIHS results, while the T8 plug-in hybrid was not updated in those ratings.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

The market looks moderate, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,031 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,611, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $26,611 sits slightly below last year's $31,541.

That decline suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the market has reset lower, so resale gains are less likely unless your vehicle is especially well equipped and well maintained.

Strong demand for a premium, safety-focused three-row SUV should still help support values over time. Clean history, desirable trims, and strong condition will matter most when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2021 XC90 earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS on non-hybrid models, and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC90 with a broad standard safety suite that includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and Pilot Assist. Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering and remains one of the smoother systems in the class.

The main caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ result applies only to non-hybrid models, since the T8 plug-in hybrid was not updated in those ratings.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 adds Care Key and newly standard tech features while keeping the XC90’s safety-first identity.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,096, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,611 average.
• It offers the same redesigned-generation XC90 formula with premium materials and strong safety appeal.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $29,489, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,611 average.
• It adds an eco-conscious angle with available plug-in hybrid efficiency and leather-free features.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale character in this generation. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is the smarter value play; if you want newer-year features and don’t mind paying more, the 2022 is worth a look.
