Volvo’s maintenance and ownership support can also help reduce friction, especially if you find a model covered by the Care by Volvo subscription program or a well-documented service history. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about buying a neglected example with expensive luxury-car upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or heavily optioned examples. Pay close attention to cabin condition, touchscreen behavior, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim and packages advertised.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base T5 FWD Momentum starts the lineup, while higher trims add more equipment and luxury touches; the leather-free wool blend is an option, and ventilated front seats require Nappa leather.
• Powertrain: You get T5, T6, and T8 powertrains, ranging from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to a plug-in hybrid setup with an electric motor; T5 models can be FWD or AWD, while T6 and T8 are AWD only.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist combines lane centering, set-speed and following-distance control, and other driver aids; standard equipment also includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist front and rear, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, and road-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is a nine-inch portrait-oriented unit, and the XC90 supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the system can be slow to respond, and the Advanced package adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: T5 FWD models are rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, T5 AWD models at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, T6 AWD models at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the T8 plug-in hybrid reaches 55 MPGe with an 18-mile EV range; the extended-range version is rated at 66 MPGe with up to 36 miles of EV range.

Which 2022 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is offered in 7 trim levels: T5 FWD Momentum, T5 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD Inscription, T8 Inscription Expression, T8 Inscription, T8 R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• T5 FWD Momentum: This is the entry point, and it makes the XC90’s core appeal accessible if you want the design, safety, and three-row layout without stretching to the pricier powertrains.
• T5 AWD Momentum: This is the best-value choice if you want the XC90’s mainstream sweet spot with all-wheel drive and a more confidence-inspiring setup for year-round use.
• T6 AWD Momentum: Choose this if you want more power than the T5 and are willing to pay for the stronger performance without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• T6 AWD Inscription: This suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more luxury-oriented equipment while staying with the gasoline powertrain.
• T8 Inscription Expression: This is the plug-in hybrid entry point, so it makes sense if you want electrified driving and the XC90’s most forward-looking powertrain at a lower rung.
• T8 Inscription: This is the best fit if you want the plug-in hybrid experience with a more premium trim balance and broader luxury appeal.
• T8 R-Design: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the plug-in hybrid powertrain paired with the sportier trim character.

Safety content also notes that the XC90 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,403 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 24.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,668, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $28,668 sits slightly below last year's $37,748.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle well documented, you may be better positioned to limit your loss later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

That strong safety profile is one of the XC90’s biggest strengths, and it aligns with the rest of the vehicle’s family-focused mission.

Should I buy a 2022 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 24.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It pairs elegant design with strong safety and an available plug-in hybrid setup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,695, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,668 average.
• It adds Care Key and minor updates while keeping the same safety-first character.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $37,350, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,668 average.
• It brings updated powertrains and more forward-looking infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale appeal, the 2022 is the smart target. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the value play; if you want newer tech and don’t mind paying more, move up to the 2023.
