What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free listings are strong but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury three-row SUV, where interior wear, electronics, and suspension condition can matter a lot. Focus on how the cabin, touchscreen, and seating surfaces have held up, since those are the kinds of details that can separate a clean example from a tired one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base T5 FWD Momentum starts the lineup, while higher trims add more equipment and luxury touches. The available leather-free upholstery is a notable differentiator, and ventilated front seats require the Nappa leather option.
• Powertrain: You can choose from T5, T6, and T8 powertrains. The T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the T6 adds supercharging, and the T8 plug-in hybrid combines gasoline and electric power for the strongest output.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist combines lane-centering, speed, and following-distance functions with other standard safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist front and rear, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, and road-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a nine-inch portrait touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, wireless-style smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay support, Android Auto capability, and over-the-air-style connected convenience through the Volvo Care app and WiFi hotspot features.
• Fuel efficiency: The T5 FWD is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, the T5 AWD at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, the T6 AWD at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the T8 plug-in hybrid reaches 55 MPGe with an 18-mile EV range or 66 MPGe with up to 36 miles of EV range.

Which 2022 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is offered in 7 trim levels: T5 FWD Momentum, T5 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD Inscription, T8 Inscription Expression, T8 Inscription, T8 R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• T5 FWD Momentum: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core style, safety, and upscale cabin without pushing the price too high. It’s the best-value starting point if you want the XC90 experience at the lowest cost.
• T5 AWD Momentum: Choose this if you want the same basic setup as the base trim but with all-wheel drive for added traction. It makes sense if you live where weather or road conditions matter more than outright efficiency.
• T6 AWD Momentum: This trim adds the stronger supercharged-and-turbocharged powertrain, so it’s the better pick if you want more performance without jumping straight to the top of the range.
• T6 AWD Inscription: This is the step-up choice for shoppers who want more luxury and a richer feature set. It suits you if you care more about premium feel than minimizing purchase price.
• T8 Inscription Expression: This is the plug-in hybrid entry point, so it’s the trim to consider if electrification matters to you and you want the XC90’s eco-minded personality.
• T8 Inscription: This is the best fit if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain with a more upscale presentation and broader luxury appeal.
• T8 R-Design: This is the most expressive trim in the lineup, and it’s the one to choose if you want the plug-in hybrid setup with the sportiest visual treatment.

The safety package is a major strength across the lineup, with Pilot Assist and the XC90’s broad standard driver-assistance suite reinforcing the value of even the lower trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

• Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,491 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 24.19% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 87.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,872, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $28,872 sits slightly below last year's $38,087.

That drop suggests the XC90 has become more accessible on the used market, which can help you buy in at a better price today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than just the badge alone.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The XC90 comes with a long list of standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist front and rear, rain-sensing wipers with integrated washers, slippery road alert, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, and road-sign recognition. Pilot Assist combines several of those systems to help keep the vehicle centered and steady on the highway with minimal driver intervention.

That combination makes safety one of the XC90’s defining strengths, and it’s a major reason the model stands out in the three-row luxury SUV class.

Should I buy a 2022 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 24.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a stylish cabin, strong safety, and available plug-in hybrid appeal.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,878, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,872 average.
• It offers a safety-focused luxury SUV with minimal changes.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $37,687, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,872 average.
• It brings updated mild-hybrid powertrains and more modern infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale character, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better value; if you want newer powertrain and tech updates, the 2023 is worth the extra money.
