Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new styling and a hybrid powertrain. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For buyers who want a family hauler that emphasizes efficiency and comfort, that combination makes the 2021 Sienna especially distinctive.
Its biggest strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. The hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain is standard equipment, which gives the Sienna a clear identity in a segment where practicality matters. It is also built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The stereo is lacking, and the styling is described as uninspired. Some drivers also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, missing features like a spare tire, and limited connectivity tech options. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s roomy cabin and strong gas mileage make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Generally — the 2021 Toyota Sienna earns 4.33/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from experts. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. Many also like the AWD and hybrid combination for road trips, which fits a family-hauler role well.
The main trade-offs are acceleration and interior material quality, along with complaints about missing features like a spare tire and limited connectivity options. That said, the Sienna’s focus on everyday usefulness, comfort, and efficiency lines up well if you want a practical minivan rather than something flashy.
With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as a dependable, trouble-free choice with strong long-term appeal, especially for families who want a vehicle they can count on. The hybrid setup is presented as a proven one, and the overall ownership experience is framed around durability and everyday confidence.
Toyota also backs the hybrid with a warranty that includes hybrid-related component coverage for eight years or 100,000 miles, which helps reduce some ownership anxiety. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about how well a specific van has been maintained and used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the van has been used for family hauling or long trips. Focus on condition details that matter in a minivan: interior wear, seat operation, infotainment behavior, and signs of uneven use. If a listing has prior damage, make sure the repair quality matches the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: LE models use 17-inch wheels and a simpler six-speaker stereo, while higher trims add larger wheels and more upscale equipment. The feature gap is most noticeable at the lower end, where you give up some comfort and tech upgrades.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower, with FWD standard and AWD available across the lineup. The setup is efficient and smooth, though the CVT can blunt throttle response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, TPMS, and an inflator kit.
- Infotainment: Every trim gets a nine-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports. Wireless charging, a rear-seat entertainment system, and premium audio are reserved for higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35/36/35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Sienna experience with standard hybrid efficiency, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and the basic infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience upgrades without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. It also unlocks more available tech and comfort features, making it the sweet spot for families who want a well-equipped van.
- XSE: This trim adds a more distinctive look and sits above the mainstream family trims, with larger wheel options and a more upscale presentation. It suits you if you want a sportier appearance and are willing to pay more for it.
- Limited: This is where the Sienna starts to feel notably more premium, with larger wheels, a 7-inch driver display, and access to higher-end audio and tech upgrades. It’s a strong choice if you want a more luxurious minivan experience.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice, adding the 10-inch head-up display, digital rearview mirror availability, and the most upscale equipment in the lineup. Buy this only if you want the most features and are comfortable paying for them.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System are standard across all trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,213 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.05% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,967.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $35,049 sits slightly below last year's $36,150.
That softer pricing can help you if you buy now, because you may be entering at a more favorable point than a year ago. For a future seller, the recent decline suggests resale values have cooled somewhat, so condition and mileage will matter even more when it’s time to trade or sell.
The Sienna’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time, especially among shoppers who prioritize practicality and efficiency. Well-kept examples are likely to remain attractive because the model’s core strengths are easy for buyers to understand.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, LATCH connectors, a rear-seat reminder, TPMS, and an inflator kit.
One important caveat is that 2021 crash-test ratings had not yet been released in the source material. That means you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and the vehicle’s inspection history when evaluating a used example.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s redesigned hybrid minivan formula is standard this year, giving you the major makeover and efficiency-focused setup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,993, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,049 average.
- It stands out for all-wheel drive and strong practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,260, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,049 average.
- It adds a Woodland trim for buyers who want a more adventurous look.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned hybrid Sienna and can accept a higher purchase price, the 2021 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer trim choice and are comfortable paying more.
