The Toyota Prius Prime mates the Prius’ normal hybrid capabilities with the ability to charge from a wall plug and a modest electric range, making it a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
Motivating every Prius Prime is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, battery pack, continuously variable automatic transmission, and dual electric motors. These produce 121 net horsepower. More importantly, they enable the Prius Prime to get 133 miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) in hybrid mode, 54 mpg in gasoline mode, 25 miles of all-electric range, and 640 miles of total range. To help you achieve those scores, the Prius Prime comes bundled with tools like Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, and Eco Diary.
The Prius Prime is offered in LE, XLE, and Limited trims. The base LE comes with heated front seats, power windows, automatic climate control, a leatherette steering wheel, a 4.2-inch color instrument panel LCD, Apple CarPlay, keyless access on the driver’s door, keyless start, and multiple 12-volt outlets. Android Auto is a new standard feature for 2021. The XLE gets an 11.6-inch vertical infotainment system, 3-door keyless access, Qi wireless charging, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-way power driver’s seat. Finally, the Luxury gets a heated steering wheel, remote climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a head-sup display, navigation, and a garage door opener.
This year, Toyota moves the Prius Prime to the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system. It comes with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and bicyclist protection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, automatic high-beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring is the only optional safety item. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluated the 2021 Prius Prime, awarding it “Acceptable” scores for small overlap front-passenger side and headlight categories, and perfect marks everywhere else.
