Summary
With 304 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,100, 34.9% of 2021 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as Toyota’s plug-in take on the Prius, and its appeal starts with packaging. It offers a good list of standard equipment and features while still delivering the range and efficiency qualities plug-in hybrid shoppers want. It also brings standard advanced safety features and an impressive electric range, which help make it a practical choice for buyers focused on efficiency.
At the same time, the 2021 Prius Prime shows its age in a competitive market. Toyota’s infotainment system is hard to use, acceleration is slow, and the car’s design may be polarizing. Poor ergonomic design further tempers the experience, so the Prius Prime is best suited to shoppers who value efficiency and standard features more than driving excitement or a particularly intuitive cabin.

The Prius Prime had all of the features we was looking for. We were looking for something that would get really good gas mileage. It is kind of a cross between electric and gas. You can drive 25 miles on electric and then it will switch to gas/electric until you can charge it again. The charging unit is quite compact. The best of both worlds. It has a lifetime guaranty on the battery for as long as you own the car. The safety features has about everything you could ask for. The only thing I could think to improve the car would be a safety feature that would show that you are approaching a stop light or stop sign. I thought the price was great for all of the features it had to offer. We had a 2009 Prius and it is a bit bigger and roomier. It drives smooth and has all of the power we feel we need and is right for us. Love this car.

Very comfortable seating. Sharp looks. Incredible fuel economy but the extended range and easy refueling of a gas engine. I buy 9 gallons about once every 2 months. Mostly running electric on daily driving. WoW.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,292 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,929 |
| Year-Round High | $23,332 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,566 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.22% |
Prices are up 3.22% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 294 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Safety.
It stands out for packaging, standard equipment, and plug-in efficiency, with a strong value proposition for shoppers who want electric range without giving up hybrid flexibility. At the same time, the ownership experience is held back by a hard-to-use infotainment system, poor ergonomics, and slow acceleration.
The main trade-offs are the car’s awkward interior controls and its sluggish pace when you ask for more power. If you want a plug-in hybrid that prioritizes efficiency and standard safety gear over driving excitement, this one fits that brief well.

Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 Prius Prime is built around Toyota’s hybrid know-how, and its plug-in setup is designed for efficiency-focused ownership. The expert evaluation also points to solid packaging and a strong feature set, which usually helps day-to-day dependability feel more reassuring.
Its performance notes emphasize that the car is not especially quick, but it is described as competent rather than flawed. Toyota also includes a three-year/36,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty, and an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related components warranty.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s tech and ergonomics still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected the front end, lighting, or driver-assistance systems. A careful pre-purchase inspection should also focus on the infotainment system, since the controls are a known weak point, and on overall cabin condition because the interior design can make wear and tear more noticeable.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The three trim levels are LE, XLE, and Limited. The cabin is largely similar across trims, with technology add-ons doing most of the differentiating, so the base trim is the one most likely to leave you without the nicer convenience features.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and an e-CVT. The setup is front-wheel drive only, and the car offers 25 miles of all-electric range, 133 MPGe in electric mode, and 54 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
- Safety package: Every version gets Toyota’s Star Safety System, plus automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 7 inches, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hot spot included. An 11.6-inch touchscreen is available, along with wireless smartphone charging and a JBL audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius Prime is rated at 133 MPGe in electric mode and 54 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
Which 2021 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the trim to target if you want the cleanest value play, because it gives you the Prius Prime’s core plug-in efficiency, standard safety equipment, and the basic tech package without pushing you into the more complicated cabin controls found higher up.
- XLE: This trim adds more technology, but it also brings the larger touchscreen setup that the expert evaluation criticizes for being difficult to use. It makes sense if you want more features and can live with the interface.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, so it suits you if you want the fullest equipment list and are willing to pay for it, but it does not change the Prius Prime’s basic driving character.
Toyota’s standard safety suite is included across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings before moving quickly.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 294 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.22% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,929, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $23,292 sits slightly above last year's $22,566.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, especially for shoppers who want plug-in efficiency and Toyota branding. If prices continue to hold near the current average, sellers should have a reasonable chance of attracting interest without steep discounting.
The year-over-year gain also points to steady demand rather than a softening market. For you as a future seller, that usually means the car should remain relatively easy to move if it stays clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime earns a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and IIHS gives it all Good crashworthiness ratings except for an Acceptable result in the small-overlap front-passenger side test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota equips every version with its Star Safety System, plus automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap front-passenger side result, along with Acceptable headlight ratings. If safety is a top priority, those are worth noting, even though the overall package is still strong.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.22% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out for its strong packaging, standard advanced safety features, and impressive electric range.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,051, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,292 average.
- It is built around efficiency and value, with a strong focus on saving money on gas.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model year with strong safety, solid owner satisfaction, and a still-reasonable price, the 2021 is the better default choice. If your main goal is to spend a little less up front, the 2020 is the more price-sensitive path.
