CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Prius Prime

Summary
With 268 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,679.00, 31.3% of 2021 Toyota Prius Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as Toyota’s plug-in take on the Prius, and its biggest strength is packaging. It offers a good list of standard equipment and features while still delivering the range and efficiency qualities that plug-in hybrid shoppers want. It also brings standard advanced safety features and an impressive electric range, which help make it appealing to buyers focused on efficiency and everyday usability.
At the same time, the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is aging quickly against the competition. Its hard-to-use infotainment system and poor ergonomic design can make the ownership experience less satisfying, and slow acceleration is another drawback. The design may also be potentially polarizing, so this is a car that will likely appeal most to shoppers who value efficiency and equipment over style or driving excitement.

The Prius Prime had all of the features we was looking for. We were looking for something that would get really good gas mileage. It is kind of a cross between electric and gas. You can drive 25 miles on electric and then it will switch to gas/electric until you can charge it again. The charging unit is quite compact. The best of both worlds. It has a lifetime guaranty on the battery for as long as you own the car. The safety features has about everything you could ask for. The only thing I could think to improve the car would be a safety feature that would show that you are approaching a stop light or stop sign. I thought the price was great for all of the features it had to offer. We had a 2009 Prius and it is a bit bigger and roomier. It drives smooth and has all of the power we feel we need and is right for us. Love this car.

Very comfortable seating. Sharp looks. Incredible fuel economy but the extended range and easy refueling of a gas engine. I buy 9 gallons about once every 2 months. Mostly running electric on daily driving. WoW.

How much does the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,794 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,930.57 |
| Year-Round High | $22,972.28 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,975 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.79% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 294 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $20,930.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?
Yes — 5/5 from users, and 6.5/10 from experts. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Safety.
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is strongest when you care about packaging, efficiency, and everyday usability. It brings a good list of standard equipment, an impressive electric range, and standard advanced safety features, which makes it a practical fit if you want plug-in capability without giving up a lot of convenience.
The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is hard to use, the ergonomics are poor, and acceleration is slow. It suits you best if you value efficiency and equipment more than style or driving excitement.
31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Prius Prime is presented as a Toyota built around hybrid know-how, with a plug-in setup that emphasizes efficiency and everyday practicality. Its powertrain is described as a conventional Toyota hybrid approach with a gasoline engine and electric motor, and the car’s overall packaging is aimed at dependable, low-drama use.
Toyota also includes a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related components warranty, which helps reduce some ownership anxiety around the plug-in system.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about living with a cabin and interface that can frustrate you over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 72.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, since accident history can matter more than mileage alone on a used hybrid.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The three trim levels are LE, XLE, and Limited. The cabin is largely similar across trims, but the higher grades add technology features, while the base trim keeps the simpler setup.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and an 8.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It is front-wheel drive only, and the car is tuned for efficiency rather than urgency.
- Safety package: Every version gets Toyota’s Star Safety System, plus automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a WiFi hot spot, and a head-up display. An 11.6-inch touchscreen and a JBL audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: It is rated at 133 MPGe in electric mode, with 55 mpg city, 53 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
Which 2021 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.

- LE: This is the trim to start with if you want the Prius Prime’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the efficiency, standard safety equipment, and everyday usability that define the model, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
- XLE: This trim adds more technology-focused equipment, but it also brings the more frustrating large-screen interface setup. Choose it if you want more features and are comfortable trading some simplicity for them.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, so it makes sense if you want the fullest equipment list and are willing to pay for it. It is the trim for you if convenience and tech matter more than keeping the purchase as lean as possible.
Every trim includes Toyota’s Star Safety System and the same core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 294 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,930.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $22,794 sits slightly below last year's $22,975.
That small decline suggests the Prius Prime is holding value fairly steadily rather than dropping sharply. For you as a future seller, that can be a positive sign because it points to a market that is still willing to pay for the model’s efficiency and plug-in appeal.
The price trend also suggests you should not expect dramatic appreciation, but you may avoid the steep depreciation that hits some less efficient or less desirable alternatives. If you buy well, the car’s market position looks stable enough to support a reasonable resale outcome later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and IIHS gave it all "Good" crashworthiness ratings except for an "Acceptable" result in the small-overlap front-passenger side test.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota’s Star Safety System comes standard, along with automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
The main caveat is that the IIHS headlight rating was only "Acceptable," and the small-overlap front-passenger side result was also "Acceptable," so you should pay attention to lighting performance and crash-history details when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong efficiency with standard advanced safety features and an impressive electric range.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,369, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $22,794 average.
- It is framed as a strong efficiency-first choice with excellent value for money.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2021 is the cleaner choice because it pairs stable pricing with strong equipment, safety, and efficiency. If you are shopping strictly on price and want to compare against a slightly older option, the 2020 is worth a look, but the 2021 gives you the more current market value and the same core plug-in appeal.
