How much does the 2021 Mazda CX-9 cost?

Prices have softened 7.54% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 547 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, reliability, and luxurious interior, and they also highlight the comfortable driving experience. The overview points to a stylish, premium-feeling SUV that is more upscale than basic transportation, which fits the owner feedback well.

The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped, and the technology is described as outdated and unintuitive. Even so, it remains a strong fit if you want a polished family SUV with a premium feel rather than maximum space.

With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to reliability, and it also describes the CX-9 as a vehicle many reviewers feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by emphasizing smooth operation and a well-sorted driving experience.

The performance notes also suggest a durable, confidence-inspiring powertrain character, with strong low-rpm torque and a six-speed automatic that behaves flawlessly. If you buy used, your main long-term ownership risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its premium feel.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?

At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident record. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs that safety systems or cameras may have been repaired after a collision. Because the CX-9’s appeal depends heavily on its premium presentation, condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Sport and Touring are fitted with 18-inch wheels, while the Carbon Edition adds a custom look with Polymetal Gray paint, cranberry red leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and dark-finish 20-inch wheels. Grand Touring and Signature bring more standard features, and Signature adds a restyled grille, a fresh wheel design, patterned aluminum cabin accents, and quilted leather with contrast piping.
• Powertrain: Every CX-9 uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims, while Signature includes all-wheel drive as standard.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and rain-sensing wipers. Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and Smart City Brake Support Reverse. Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: The CX-9 uses Mazda Connect with a 10.25-inch static display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with text messaging support, Pandora integration, 9-1-1 automatic emergency notification, and Mazda Connect services with a free three-year trial plus a separate three-month/2GB WiFi hotspot trial.
• Fuel efficiency: The CX-9 is described as thirsty, and the expert testing route returned 20.1 mpg.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point if you want the CX-9’s core strengths — stylish design, premium materials, and standard driver-assistance tech — without paying for extras you may not need.
• Touring: This is the trim to watch if you want a more complete everyday package while staying below the higher-priced luxury-leaning versions.
• Carbon Edition: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest step up in style and equipment, including the upgraded look, second-row captain’s chairs, and added safety and convenience features.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the surround-view camera system and a more upscale feature set without going all the way to the top trim.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious choice, with the richest cabin materials and standard all-wheel drive, so it suits you best if you want the most premium CX-9 experience.

The Carbon Edition represents the next big upgrade in safety technology, while Grand Touring adds the surround-view camera system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 547 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,746, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-9's resale value?

The current average of $21,746 sits slightly below last year's $23,519.

That decline suggests the CX-9 has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand from shoppers looking for a premium-feeling SUV at a lower entry price. For a future seller, that means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than broad market momentum alone.

The CX-9’s premium interior, strong owner satisfaction, and upscale image should help it remain attractive to used shoppers. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment are likely to hold up better than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal-impact ratings for the driver and front passenger.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and rain-sensing wipers. The Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and Smart City Brake Support Reverse, while Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.

One caveat is that lane-centering assistance is unavailable, and the adaptive cruise control can struggle to smoothly maintain following distance at higher speeds. Even so, the CX-9’s safety package is a major strength, especially on higher trims.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 update brings a better infotainment system and added safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $23,450, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,746 average.
• It adds a broader trim lineup and standard all-wheel drive.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful 2021 updates. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year setup and standard AWD, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative.
