The Mazda CX-9 is a three-row crossover in the same category as the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and the new Kia Telluride. For 2020, it gets some minor updates. Previously, all CX-9s were 7-seaters, with three seats in the second row and two in the third row. This year, Mazda introduces a captain’s chair package for the second row, which reduces overall seating to 6. You can pair the captain’s chairs with or without a center console. The CX-9’s engine carries over from last year. It’s a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder capable of 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on 93-octane fuel, which is 10 more lb-ft than last year's version offered. While the engine is tuned for premium fuel, you can opt for regular fuel and a slight power deficit. A 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is an option. With regular fuel, the CX-9 is rated for 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined with front-wheel drive (FWD), and 20, 26, and 23 with AWD. The CX-9 comes in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature trims. The Sport comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, heated outside mirrors, automatic headlights, a power driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, keyless start, and a 7-inch infotainment system. Other trims add Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a 9-inch infotainment system, navigation, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, auto-folding side mirrors, and a heated steering wheel. The Mazda i-Activsense safety suite is newly standard on the CX-9. It bundles a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Options consist of a heads-up display, parking sensors, and traffic-sign recognition. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the CX-9 top marks in its most recent evaluation.
