CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 8,846 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,174, 33.5% of 2021 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
82.7% of 2021 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends its long-running, unmistakable identity with powertrain choices that keep it current. It remains an icon with roots in the original Willys Jeep, and its appeal comes from being different from the car-based SUVs that dominate the market. Jeep also continues to update it to meet buyer demand, which helps explain why it stays popular with loyal fans.
For 2021, the four-door Wrangler Unlimited offers a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and a potent Hemi V8, giving buyers two distinctive ways to experience the model. Those powertrains are exclusive to the four-door body style, which adds to the Wrangler’s sense of character. Its strengths are clear: excellent off-road capability, stylish design, and multiple powertrain options. The tradeoffs are just as clear, with poor ride quality, poor handling, and a lack of curtain airbags among the notable drawbacks.

Was really in the market for a Sahara as we do very little of road. Found a loaded Rubicon that checked all the boxes so we went with it. Although the suspension is a little stiffer then the Sahara it was not too bad. Love the one touch roof and removable rear windows.

I’m moving from a 2004 TJ rubicon to a 2021 JL rubicon unlimited lots of improvements on the new jeep, the TJ is more hard core off-road. No other models compare to a jeep

How much does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,130 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,130 |
| Year-Round High | $31,872 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,871 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.74% |
Prices have softened 11.74% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,880 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its off-road capability, power, and comfort, and they also value its adventurous character and manual features. The trade-offs are familiar: limited cargo space, some missing modern tech in certain trims, and a few interior quirks.
For you, that means the Wrangler makes the most sense if you want a distinctive SUV with real trail ability and a strong enthusiast following. The market also shows 34.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that owners trust for its off-road capability, power, and comfort, with several comments reinforcing its rugged, dependable personality. The expert review also emphasizes that Jeep keeps updating the Wrangler to meet buyer demand, which supports the sense that this model is built to stay relevant over time.
The cost-effectiveness review also notes that Jeep offers a wide variety of powertrains and equipment, which can help you tailor the truck to your needs. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Wrangler’s rugged character comes with compromises you should inspect carefully before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any Wrangler you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the model’s appeal often depends on how hard it was used, especially if it saw trail duty. Pay close attention to condition, equipment, and signs of wear that could affect daily livability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport is the bare-bones starting point with manual door locks, manual mirrors, cloth seats, and a 5-inch audio display, while the Sport S adds power windows and locks, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, and access to more options. The Sahara shifts toward a more street-oriented setup with dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while the High Altitude adds leather trim, the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, gloss black 20-inch wheels, and body-color bumpers.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Other options include a mild-hybrid version of that V6, a 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, and the Rubicon 392’s 6.4-liter V8.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are available, but they are all optional. There is no available lane-departure warning feature, and the base configuration is especially basic.
- Infotainment: The Sport uses a 5-inch screen, while the 7-inch Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is optional on the Sport S and standard on other trims. You can also opt for the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, and Jeep’s larger displays are described as crisp and easy to read.
- Fuel efficiency: The gas V6 with the automatic returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the manual version returns 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The 2.0-liter turbo returns 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined, the EcoDiesel returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, and the Wrangler 4xe returns 40 MPGe and 20 mpg combined after electric range is depleted.
Which 2021 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the most stripped-down Wrangler, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and plan to build from there. It comes with the basics, but you’ll likely want to add options if you expect modern convenience or infotainment.
- Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the everyday features you’ll miss most in the Sport, including power windows and locks, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry. It also opens the door to the Technology Group and Cold Weather Package, which makes it the smartest starting point if you want a more usable daily driver.
- Sahara: This is the better pick if you want a more street-friendly Wrangler with a nicer cabin and more standard comfort. The dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, larger brakes, and standard 7-inch touchscreen make it feel more complete.
- Rubicon: This is the trim to choose if off-road capability is your priority. It adds beefed-up suspension and running gear, front-and-rear locking differentials, and a disconnecting front sway bar, making it the most trail-focused version in the lineup.
The safety content also notes that forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,880 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,130, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $28,130 sits slightly below last year's $31,871.
That price movement suggests the Wrangler has already given back some value from a stronger prior year, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale will depend heavily on condition, trim, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
The Wrangler’s strong enthusiast appeal should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment. If you buy carefully now, you may be better positioned to preserve value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler safe?
The Wrangler is also available with a live tire-pressure monitoring system, which can come in handy when off-roading.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment is limited in the base configuration, and many useful driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard. Available features include forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring, but there is no available lane-departure warning feature.
That means you should pay close attention to the exact safety equipment on any used example you’re considering. If safety tech matters to you, trim and option content will matter a lot more than the badge on the hood.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and Hemi V8 to the four-door lineup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $25,620, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,130 average.
- It adds a new diesel engine to broaden the Wrangler Unlimited’s appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,463, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,130 average.
- It adds more open-air versatility and reinforces the Wrangler’s distinctive character.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and broad powertrain choice, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 is worth considering if you want to spend more for a newer model-year alternative.
