overall

Summary
With 407 currently listed for sale near Bakersfield, CA and an average price of $27,088.00, 55.0% of 2021 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends its long-running, instantly recognizable identity with powertrains that reflect changing buyer demands. It remains an icon with roots in the original Willys Jeep, and it still appeals by being rugged and different from the car-based SUVs that dominate the market. At the same time, Jeep keeps updating it to stay relevant, and the 2021 model offers both a plug-in hybrid option and a Hemi V8 in the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.
That mix of tradition and variety is a big part of the Wrangler’s appeal. Buyers get excellent off-road capability and a stylish design, along with multiple powertrain options that broaden its personality. The tradeoff is that it still has the drawbacks expected of a vehicle built around off-road toughness: poor ride quality, poor handling, and a lack of curtain airbags. Owners also tend to praise its adventurous character and off-road strength, though some note limited cargo space and a few interior quirks.

Was really in the market for a Sahara as we do very little of road. Found a loaded Rubicon that checked all the boxes so we went with it. Although the suspension is a little stiffer then the Sahara it was not too bad. Love the one touch roof and removable rear windows.

I’m moving from a 2004 TJ rubicon to a 2021 JL rubicon unlimited lots of improvements on the new jeep, the TJ is more hard core off-road. No other models compare to a jeep

How much does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,510 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,496.87 |
| Year-Round High | $32,009.54 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,006 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.92% |
Prices have softened 10.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,873 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $28,496.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Wrangler’s off-road capability, power, and comfort, and they also like the adventurous character it brings to daily driving. The review summary also points to its manual features as part of the appeal, which fits the model’s rugged personality.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert notes poor ride quality and poor handling, and the overview also calls out limited cargo space and interior quirks. That means you should think of it as a capability-first SUV rather than a polished commuter.
If you want a vehicle that feels different from the usual car-based SUV and still offers multiple powertrain choices, this year’s Wrangler fits that use case well. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle people tend to trust for its off-road capabilities, power, and comfort, and it also highlights the Wrangler’s adventurous spirit. That kind of feedback usually suggests buyers feel confident living with it over time, especially when they value character and capability as much as daily convenience.
The expert review also frames the Wrangler as a vehicle that keeps evolving while staying true to its core identity, which supports the idea that it remains a dependable long-term proposition for the right buyer. The main ownership risk is that its rugged design and feature gaps can make it less forgiving if you expect a conventional SUV experience.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, interior wear, and any signs of hard use. Given the Wrangler’s off-road mission, pay extra attention to how the vehicle has been treated rather than just how it looks in photos.
Key things to evaluate:
Trim level: The Sport is the bare-bones starting point with manual door locks, black plastic fenders and bumpers, cloth seats, manual side mirrors, a 5-inch audio display, and USB and auxiliary inputs. The Sport S adds power windows and locks, power heated side mirrors, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry, while the Sahara moves toward a more street-oriented setup with dual-zone climate control, upgraded premium cloth upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The Rubicon is the off-road-focused choice with beefed-up suspension and running gear, two-piece fender flares, and more capability-oriented hardware.
Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Other options include a mild-hybrid version of that V6, a 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid with 275 hp and up to 22 miles of electric range. The Rubicon 392 adds a 6.4-liter V8 with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
Safety package: Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are available, but they are all optional. There is no available lane-departure warning feature, and the base configuration is especially basic. You do get a backup camera with dynamic guidelines, and a live tire-pressure monitoring system is available.
Infotainment: The Sport uses a basic 5-inch screen, while the 7-inch Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is optional on the Sport S and standard on other trims. You can also opt for an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen. The larger screens have crisp graphics and easy-to-read layouts, and Jeep includes steering-wheel radio toggles.
Fuel efficiency: The 4xe returns 40 MPGe and 20 mpg combined once the battery is depleted. The EcoDiesel returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The gas 2.0-liter turbo returns 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The automatic V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the manual V6 returns 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The Rubicon 392 returns 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
Sport: This is the most stripped-down Wrangler, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and plan to build from there. You get the core Wrangler look and basic equipment, but many comfort and tech features are missing unless you add options.
Sport S: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the everyday conveniences you are most likely to miss in the Sport, including power windows and locks, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry. It also opens the door to the Cold Weather Package and the Technology Group, which makes it the smart middle ground if you want a usable Wrangler without jumping too far up the price ladder.
Sahara: This is the better pick if you want a more street-friendly Wrangler with a nicer cabin and more standard convenience. The dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and 7-inch touchscreen make it feel more polished than the lower trims.
Rubicon: This is the one to buy if off-road capability is your priority. The beefed-up suspension and running gear, two-piece fender flares, Rock-Trac 4WD, locking differentials, and disconnecting front sway bar make it the most trail-ready choice.
The safety package remains mostly optional across the lineup, so you should not assume a higher trim automatically solves the Wrangler’s safety-feature gaps.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,873 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,496.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $28,510 sits slightly below last year's $32,006.
That price movement suggests the Wrangler has already absorbed some of its recent depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. Because the model still has strong enthusiast appeal and a distinctive identity, demand should remain healthier than for many mainstream SUVs. The biggest resale advantage will likely go to examples that are clean, well maintained, and equipped in a way that matches buyer demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Wrangler’s safety equipment is limited in the base configuration, and several modern driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard. Available features include forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, a backup camera with dynamic guidelines, and a live tire-pressure monitoring system. There is no available lane-departure warning feature.
That means you should pay close attention to the exact equipment on any used example you consider, especially if you want more than the bare minimum. The main caveat is that the Wrangler’s safety story depends heavily on trim and options, so a lower-spec truck may leave you with fewer protections than you expect.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid option and a Hemi V8 to broaden the Wrangler’s appeal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $25,799, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,510 average.
- It adds a new diesel engine and broadens the Wrangler’s mechanical appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,739, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,510 average.
- It adds to the Wrangler’s distinctive formula while keeping the same core character.
The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of powertrains and the strongest current-year value signal, the 2021 is the better primary target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while still delivering the Wrangler experience. If you want to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is worth comparing, but it does not change the Wrangler’s core formula enough to make the 2021 obsolete.
