Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and numerous safety features, while also calling out the advanced technology and off-road capability. In context, it’s aimed at you if you want a midsize SUV that balances everyday drivability with Jeep character and utility. The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and an underwhelming base engine. Good and great deals account for 33.9% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers highlighting its smooth ride, great value, and numerous safety features. The expert review reinforces that impression by describing it as a decent all-around family hauler with a lot of capability and a capable, fuel-saving transmission. If you’re shopping used, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and doesn’t have the construction or feature-related complaints some owners mention.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a careful inspection of the body, electronics, and interior condition, especially if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or vehicles priced below the market average. Focus on whether the equipment you want is actually present, since some buyers note missing convenience features on certain examples.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level Latitude uses 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive, while an 80th Anniversary Edition adds 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding instead of the cheaper-looking black. The panoramic sunroof is optional, so check whether the specific vehicle has it if that matters to you.
• Powertrain: You’re offered a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower on the Latitude and Latitude Plus, a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 hp, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. The turbo engine is optional on the Latitude Lux and Limited, and the Trailhawk is the model to look at if off-road capability matters to you.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk, and it’s part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
• Infotainment: The Cherokee uses Uconnect with a 7-inch touchscreen on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Latitude Lux, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the Limited and Trailhawk. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but wired rather than wireless, and it can also be equipped with a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA-rated fuel economy reaches up to 31 mpg highway on FWD models with the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine. The AWD base 2.4-liter engine returns 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined, while AWD V-6 models can drop to 21 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Latitude: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Cherokee experience with the 2.4-liter engine, 17-inch wheels, and the smaller 7-inch Uconnect screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it’s also the trim where some of the nicer visual and tech upgrades are missing.
• Latitude Plus: This trim keeps the same basic powertrain setup as the Latitude, so the value here is more about stepping up from the base feel without jumping all the way to the pricier trims. It’s a reasonable middle step if you want the Cherokee’s usability without chasing the more expensive equipment.
• Latitude Lux: This is the best-value trim if you want a more appealing mix of equipment and available power. It gets the 7-inch touchscreen and can be optioned with the 2.0-liter turbo engine, which gives you a stronger performance story than the base four-cylinder.
• Limited: This is the trim to target if you want the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen and more of the Cherokee’s comfort-and-tech appeal. It also unlocks adaptive cruise control with stop and go, making it the better pick if you want a more complete daily-driver setup.
• Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if off-road capability is your priority. The expert review specifically calls out Jeep Active Drive Lock with a 56:1 crawling ratio and Selec-Speed Crawl Control, and user feedback also highlights the Trailhawk trim for its off-road capability.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the Limited and Trailhawk are the trims to consider if you want adaptive cruise control with stop and go.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,160 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.40% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,364, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $18,364 sits slightly below last year's $20,494.

That decline suggests the Cherokee has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower cost basis, which can help cushion depreciation if the market stays steady. Strong demand for well-kept examples should still support values, especially for trims with desirable equipment and a clean history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee safe?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, and it did not earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk trims, and it’s part of an option package on the Trailhawk. The main caveat is the headlight performance: upper trims received an Acceptable rating, while the rest received a Marginal rating.

Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model year stands out for its impressive, easy-to-use technology and its mix of everyday drivability with Jeep character.

The bottom line: The 2021 Cherokee makes the most sense if you want a used SUV with strong tech, solid owner satisfaction, and a market that currently favors shoppers. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find value here, but you should compare trims carefully so you don’t give up the features you actually want.
