CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 3,323 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,965, 32.8% of 2021 Jeep Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Cherokee 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
78.1% of 2021 Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a midsize SUV that arrived on Jeep’s all-new platform for the 2014 model year and carried a name with a lot of history behind it. That legacy helped make the KL-generation Cherokee a talking point from the start, especially because it was meant to follow in the footsteps of the earlier Cherokee that helped define the class. Even so, the 2021 Cherokee’s appeal is less about nostalgia and more about being a vehicle that can do more than many buyers expect.
What makes it distinctive is the combination of technology and everyday usability. The test-drive data highlights impressive, easy-to-use technology, and owner feedback points to a smooth ride, strong value, and numerous safety features. It also has off-road capability that many buyers appreciate. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the design can be polarizing, the base engine is described as underwhelming, and cargo space is limited. For shoppers who want a Cherokee with a broad mix of comfort, capability, and modern features, the 2021 model has a clear identity, even if it does not satisfy everyone on style or practicality.

It’s a nice car, deceptively large inside, and comfortable. I’m average height but on the fluffy side, and it’s a very comfortable fit. Nice smooth ride. A/c feels like a freezer (I bought the car on the hottest day of the year and I was plenty cool on the long drive home.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. Owners repeatedly point to strong value, a smooth ride, advanced technology, and numerous safety features, while also appreciating the off-road capability. The main trade-offs are a polarizing design, an underwhelming base engine, and limited cargo space. For you, that means the Cherokee makes the most sense if you want a well-equipped, comfort-oriented SUV with Jeep character rather than the most practical or universally appealing shape. With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers describing the Cherokee as a vehicle they trust for everyday use and long-term value. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the nine-speed automatic as a capable, fuel-saving transmission with better behavior than many rivals’ CVTs. The Cherokee also offers remote start, which adds a useful convenience perk for daily ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some examples may show the wear-and-tear issues or build-quality complaints that owners have flagged, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on paper. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, electronics, and signs of uneven wear, since those are the kinds of issues that can separate a good used example from a frustrating one. Pay close attention to how the vehicle feels on the road and whether its equipment works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Latitude uses 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive, while an 80th Anniversary Edition adds 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding for a more upscale look. The panoramic sunroof is an available feature that can make the cabin feel more open.
- Powertrain: You can find a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower, a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 hp, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. The turbo engine is optional on the Latitude Lux and Limited, and all models use a nine-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
- Infotainment: The Cherokee uses Uconnect with a 7-inch touchscreen on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Latitude Lux, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the Limited and Trailhawk. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA-rated fuel economy reaches up to 31 mpg highway on FWD models with the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine. The AWD base 2.4-liter model is rated at 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined. AWD V-6 models are rated at 21 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Latitude: This is the starting point, and it gives you the core Cherokee experience with the 2.4-liter engine and the smaller 7-inch Uconnect screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable keeping the equipment list simple.
- Latitude Plus: This trim keeps the same basic mechanical setup as the Latitude but adds a bit more comfort and convenience. It is the better choice if you want a more livable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Latitude Lux: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it opens the door to the stronger 2.0-liter turbo engine and keeps the more affordable 7-inch touchscreen. If you want a nicer-feeling Cherokee without going all the way to the upper trims, this is the one to focus on.
- Limited: This trim is the more upscale road-oriented choice, with the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen and access to the turbo engine. It also unlocks adaptive cruise control with stop and go, which makes it the best fit if you want more convenience and a richer feature set.
- Trailhawk: This is the trim to choose if off-road capability matters most. It pairs the 8.4-inch touchscreen with Jeep Active Drive Lock, a 56:1 crawling ratio, and Selec-Speed Crawl Control, making it the most adventure-focused Cherokee in the lineup.
Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is standard only on the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,310 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,954, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $18,954 sits slightly below last year's $21,137.
That decline suggests the Cherokee has become more affordable for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. Trim choice and equipment matter too, since better-equipped versions tend to be easier to market to the next shopper.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee earns Good ratings from IIHS in every crashworthiness category, but it did not earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. It earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with a slight demerit for front driver side crash protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cherokee comes standard with lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk. The main caveat is headlight performance: upper trims received an Acceptable rating, while the rest received a Marginal rating.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model stands out for its impressive, easy-to-use technology and broad mix of comfort, capability, and modern features.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, technology, and Jeep character, the 2021 is the year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2021’s feature balance and market softness.
