Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson stands out as the final model year of its generation, and that timing gives it a particular appeal for shoppers who want a well-equipped compact SUV without waiting for the next redesign. Hyundai loaded it with plenty of tech and safety features, and it was offered at a competitive price, which helps explain why the older model still makes sense even as a new Tucson was on the way.
It also has a few traits that make it easy to live with day to day. The Tucson’s design is stylish, its cabin is comfortable, and its technology is easy to use. Those strengths help offset its weaker points, which include sluggish performance, an underwhelming base engine, and noticeable noise. Even so, the 2021 Tucson remains attractive for buyers who value comfort, straightforward features, and solid value over outright speed.

CPO so 10/10,000 warranty still valid. Reliable car, nice features, good gas mileage, good value. Pickup lacking but that’s because I was driving a v8 prior.

I was looking for a car that my family could comfortably ride in, and the Tucson was the perfect car for that. Its easy to drive and the ride quality is pretty good. Above all, the long warranty allows you to drive with confidence. However, drivers who seek the fun of driving may not be interested. I think I purchased it for my own purposes.

I really like the blind spot warning signal and the back up camera as well. I thought this car was a great price for only 1 owner, no accidents & low mileage. This car was missing the cargo pkg that should have came with the car as promised. I didn’t shop around for any other models, since this was the only one I wanted. My 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited, I bought brand new and would have kept it for the rest of my life, but on March 20, 2023 it was totaled in an accident.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Tucson cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,504 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,170.12 |
| Year-Round High | $18,905.54 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,905 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.41% |
Prices have softened 7.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 2,588 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $17,170.12, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Tucson earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great handling, and strong feature content for the price. The review summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience that many buyers can count on over the long term.
On the road, the Tucson’s comfortable ride and easy-to-use technology support its appeal as a practical daily driver. The trade-offs are its sluggish performance and underwhelming base engine, so it fits you best if you value comfort and value more than quick acceleration.
With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free SUV that many shoppers can count on. That kind of praise matters if you want a used vehicle that feels settled and confidence-inspiring rather than experimental.
The expert evaluation also reinforces that impression by describing the Tucson as a value-focused compact SUV with a comfortable ride and strong everyday usability. Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty adds another ownership advantage, especially if you want extra peace of mind.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim level you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, manually adjustable front seats, a digital driver information display, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera system, and an 8-inch touchscreen, so base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps.
- Powertrain: The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 181 hp and 175 lb-ft. The base engine is described as underwhelming, while the 2.4-liter is the better choice if you want more relaxed everyday performance.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are reserved for upper-tier trims.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while an 8-inch screen is available and standard on the Ultimate trim. The system is easy to use, and wireless device charging is available on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The AWD version of the 2.0-liter model returns 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The 2.4-liter engine returns 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined with FWD, or 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined with AWD.
Which 2021 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Tucson experience with the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the basic comfort and convenience features. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price, but you should expect to give up several comfort and safety upgrades found higher up.
- Value: This trim adds heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated side mirrors, roof rails, HD radio, satellite radio, and LED headlight accents. It is the best-value choice if you want a noticeable step up in everyday comfort without jumping too far in price.
- SEL: This trim brings the stronger 2.4-liter engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-seat USB power outlet. It is a smart pick if you want the better powertrain and a more polished cabin experience.
- Sport: This trim adds 19-inch wheels, LED head-and-taillights, fog lights, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless device charging, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and an Infinity premium audio system. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more convenience features.
- Limited: This trim adds a 360-degree camera system, integrated side-mirror turn signals, chrome exterior accents, leather upholstery, an eight-way power front-passenger seat, and a heated steering wheel. It is the right choice if you want the most premium feel without going all the way to the top trim.
- Ultimate: This trim adds the 8-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rain-sensing wipers, a color trip computer, and a panoramic sunroof. It is the most fully equipped version and fits you best if you want the richest feature set.
Upper trims are where you’ll find the extra safety tech, including adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,588 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,170.12, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $17,504 sits slightly below last year's $18,905.
That softer pricing suggests the Tucson has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than you would with a model that is still dropping quickly.
Its strong value proposition and broad appeal as a comfortable, easy-to-use compact SUV should help keep demand steady. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson safe?
It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tucson comes with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring as standard equipment. If you want adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, or blind-spot monitoring, you’ll need to shop upper trims.
That means the Tucson is a strong safety choice overall, but you should verify which driver-assistance features are actually installed on the specific used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final year of the generation, with strong value, comfort, and plenty of tech and safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,560, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,504 average.
- It brings a redesigned body with more cargo and passenger space.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it delivers strong equipment, good safety, and a lower average price. If you want the newer redesign and can spend more, the 2022 is the better path for added space and a more modern package.
