How much does the 2021 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 from owners and an 8.5/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. In everyday use, that lines up with a sedan that feels practical without giving up personality.

The trade-offs are worth noting: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. Even so, the Sonata fits well if you want a midsize sedan that balances on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality.

With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to find a compelling value.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting strong fuel economy, an excellent warranty, and a generally trouble-free feel. The expert review also emphasizes the Sonata’s industry-leading warranty and three years of free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.

That said, used buyers should still watch for signs of wear, especially on higher-mileage examples or cars with heavily used optional equipment.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?

At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or has higher mileage. Focus on bodywork quality, tire wear, brake condition, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The N Line treatment adds a more aggressive exterior, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, dark chrome accents, a panoramic sunroof, and 19-inch wheels. It’s the right fit if you want the sportiest-looking and most performance-focused Sonata here.
• Powertrain: A turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control. It’s the clear choice if you want the strongest acceleration and the most engaging driving character.
• Safety package: Hyundai’s SmartSense collection includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist. This is a comprehensive suite, and it’s standard on the N Line.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Blue Link connected services, and Hyundai Digital Key. It does not include a WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this powertrain should return 27 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.

Here's the short version:

The N Line is the one to buy if you want the Sonata at its most distinctive, most powerful, and most feature-rich. It adds the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, the dual-clutch transmission, sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a strong tech and safety package. It’s the best-value choice here because there isn’t a lower trim to step through, and this version bundles the most desirable equipment.

The safety package is standard and especially comprehensive, so you’re not giving up driver-assistance content by choosing this trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,442 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,026, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $17,033 sits slightly below last year's $18,380.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum.

Well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history should be easier to move than cars with accident records or visible wear. If you buy carefully now, you’ll be in a better position to protect value later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Sonata N Line is equipped with Hyundai’s SmartSense collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.

That’s a broad and sophisticated safety package, and the expert review notes that Highway Drive Assist works smoothly and accurately in traffic. One caveat is that the review also notes the NHTSA had not carried over the standard Sonata’s frontal-impact ratings to the N Line at the time of publication, and IIHS had not yet assigned a rating.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 N Line brings a turbocharged 290-horsepower engine, a dual-clutch transmission, and a comprehensive SmartSense safety suite.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $19,584, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,033 average.
• It adds a stronger value-and-quality pitch with an outstanding warranty and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.

The bottom line: If you want the better price today, the 2021 is the smarter path, especially if you’re focused on value and a well-equipped sport sedan. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year with a broader value message, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
