CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 1,407 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,182, 31.8% of 2021 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
71.1% of 2021 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that tries to make practicality feel more engaging. The expert test drive data describes the Sonata N Line as a credible car for driving enthusiasts who still want a sedan that is thrilling to drive, and it also says the model is aimed at people who want on-pavement performance without giving up passenger and cargo practicality. That combination gives the Sonata a distinctive place in a shrinking car market, where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
It also brings together several appealing traits that broaden its appeal beyond performance alone. The listed strengths include stylish design, multiple powertrain options, and impressive technology, while the summary says the Sonata N Line addresses both performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package at a bargain price. At the same time, the car is not without compromises: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. Owner feedback also points to a smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, and an excellent powertrain warranty, though some drivers mention cabin noise and frustration with optional features that require an upgrade for full functionality.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

Cabin noise but I don’t mind it’s relaxing. Limited is fast too in sport mode. Love ambient interior lighting.

Drivers consistently praise the Sonata for its smooth driving experience, safety features, and strong fuel economy. The user feedback also highlights its stylish design and excellent powertrain warranty, which helps it stand out as a practical daily driver.
The expert review adds that it fits buyers who want on-pavement performance without giving up passenger and cargo practicality. Trade-offs include the lack of all-wheel drive and an underwhelming base engine.
With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to find a strong-value example.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers especially appreciating the car’s strong fuel economy and excellent powertrain warranty. The expert review also describes the Sonata N Line as a compelling package that feels like it should cost thousands more, which supports confidence in the overall ownership proposition.
The cost-effectiveness review also notes three years of free scheduled maintenance, which is a useful ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly and not overused in a way that could erode its value proposition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, brake condition, and whether the technology and driver-assistance systems operate as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line adds a more aggressive exterior treatment, 19-inch wheels, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, and dark chrome accents. A panoramic sunroof is standard, and the base-car feature gaps matter if you want the sportier look and richer cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. It also adds paddle shifters, rev-matching, launch control, and a sport-tuned suspension.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Infotainment: The N Line gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, wireless smartphone charging, navigation, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Blue Link connected services, and no WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the powertrain should return 27 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

Here's the short version:
The N Line: is the one to buy if you want the Sonata’s most engaging driving character, strongest performance hardware, and the richest mix of sport styling and tech. It’s the best-value choice here because the expert review calls out its bargain pricing relative to what it delivers, and it suits you best if you want a sedan that feels genuinely quick without giving up everyday practicality.
The safety package is comprehensive and standard on this trim, so you do not need to step up for the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,402 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,126, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $17,183 sits slightly below last year's $18,620.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you preserve as much value as possible.
The Sonata’s value story is still supported by its strong equipment level, warranty reputation, and broad appeal as a practical midsize sedan. If demand stays steady for well-equipped, efficient cars, that should help cushion resale performance over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s SmartSense suite is standard on the N Line and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
That is a broad and sophisticated set of driver-assistance features, and the expert review says Highway Drive Assist works smoothly and accurately in traffic. The main caveat is that the review notes the N Line did not yet have carried-over NHTSA frontal-impact ratings at the time of publication, so you should pay close attention to crash-test information and equipment details when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 Sonata N Line combines strong performance, practical packaging, and bargain pricing.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $19,858, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,183 average.
- It adds a quieter cabin and a broader value-focused identity.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it delivers strong performance, good equipment, and a softer market price. If you can spend more and want a newer model-year feel, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize refinement over savings.
