Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade stands out as a midsize, three-row SUV that blends style, comfort, and practicality in a way that makes it feel more upscale than its price suggests. It is described as affordable, roomy, comfortable, safe, high-tech, enjoyable to drive, and remarkably stylish, and it is presented as one of the best midsize, three-row SUVs money can buy. That combination gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want family-friendly space without giving up a polished look or a well-equipped cabin.
For 2021, the Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The lineup includes SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy, with base prices ranging from $32,525 to $46,050, not including a destination charge of $1,175. Its strengths are reinforced by stylish design, premium interior materials, and a spacious third row, while its main drawback is fairly pedestrian performance. Owner feedback also echoes the appeal of the roomy interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, and elegant design, though some drivers mention the price and occasional cabin noise at high speeds.

Reviewed a 2021 Hyundai Limited FWD on Apr 19, 2025
I purchased my 2021 Hyundai Palisade during the summer of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of vehicles, it’s the first vehicle that I NEVER test drove before I purchased it. Fortunately, my youngest brother had one that was similar and he had given me raving reviews about it. So, I wasn’t too concerned about its handling or drivability. During my ownership of the Palisade, it drove and handled superbly well in all road conditions. It didn’t matter what the road conditions were, the Palisade was always well grounded and with good tires, not even heavily wet roads were able to throw it off course. I would travel once or twice a year to Colorado Springs, Co., to visit my daughter and her family and the trips were always smooth and comfortable. Driving the Palisade was an absolute pleasure to do. Now, for the reasons why I traded in the Palisade and purchased a 2025 Ram 1500 instead. The Limited model comes with a sunroof and little did I know but Hyundai uses plastic for the sunroof rail system that allows the sunroof to slide back and forth. Well, I wasn’t a big user of the sunroof and that apparently was my mistake. You see, this last fall, October, 2024, I believe, my sunroof rail system broke. Yes, it flat broke because as I was told, I didn’t use it enough. It was explained to me that since the parts are plastic and that there’s grease along the rail system, I needed to use the sunroof more frequently in order to keep those parts well lubricated by using the sunroof regularly. Since, I didn’t use the sunroof regularly, I may have used it 12 times in my 4 years of owning it, that’s what lead to the rail system being locked up and causing it to break. It makes sense but WOW is that crazy. I was also told that the repair would cost me over $7K!!! That wasn’t going to happen, so with my girlfriend’s help, we taped and sealed the sunroof using some gorilla tape and there were no leaks. It was during this same time that the sunroof broke, I was informed by the Hyundai dealer, following an oil change, that another PLASTIC part had broken. This time it was the PLASTIC oil filter housing unit. Apparently, it had possibly been broken when someone changed the oil filter during an oil change. I can’t prove that but it’s the most logical explanation. Since the sunroof wasn’t leaking and after I found a local mechanic shop to replace the oil filter housing unit, the Hyundai dealer wanted way too much money for the repair, I was content to go on and keep my Hyundai Palisade, which had 108K miles on it, and run off into the sunset with it. Well, not so quick, because I began to notice that there was a possible problem that was developing with the transmission. I never took to a mechanic or service center to be looked at but I believe that the transmission was beginning to slip. There were rare occasions, one or twice a week, where the transmission seemed to make a different sound around 20-30 mph. It wasn’t every day but I did notice it. Well, that was the last straw. There may not have been anything wrong with the transmission at all but I wasn’t going to keep it and find out. Therefore, I decided to trade it in and I purchased the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. My time with the Palisade was great and I enjoyed driving it but the reliability and quality of the vehicle was deeply impacted by plastic parts in the wrong locations. Those plastic parts and reliability issues are the direct reasons why I traded in the Palisade once I noticed the possible transmission issue. It was almost like the vehicle was built to last 100K miles, due to its own powertrain warranty and once that was done, so was the vehicle. It’s only due to the fun and pleasure of owning and driving the Palisade for the first problem free 100K miles that I’m even giving the vehicle 3 out of 5 stars. When I purchased the Palisade, I truly thought I had gotten a well equipped vehicle for a bargain. Unfortunately, in the long run, despite the Palisade being well equipped, it wasn’t reliable for the long term and thus, I probably won’t buy another Hyundai ever again. Now, Hyundai and Chevy are the two manufacturers that I will have to avoid. My 1991 Chevy 1500 had to have its transmission rebuilt at only 109K miles nearly 20 years ago and I haven’t purchased a Chevy or GMC vehicle since then. I like dependable and reliable vehicles that last without major repairs being needed around 100K miles. That’s not asking a lot and I don’t see why manufacturers don’t build vehicles that last at least until 150K miles before major repairs are needed, when owners are keeping up with routine maintenance, like myself.

The best features you can get for the year. Best value for $$ other than a Kia Sorrento sx imo. Just be careful of the warranty expiring at a critical time between 160000km and 180000km as these are the times where a lot could break down all at once.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Palisade cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,870 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,808.15 |
| Year-Round High | $27,003.77 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,008 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.62% |
Prices have softened 11.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,266 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping. If you find a listing below $23,808.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade a good car?
Yes — the 4.64/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 9/10. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise the spacious interior, abundant features, and comfortable ride. They also frequently highlight the elegant design and high-tech feel, with many comparing it favorably to more expensive luxury SUVs.
The main trade-offs are the fairly pedestrian performance and some reports of cabin noise at high speeds. In practical terms, that means you should buy it for family comfort, space, and features rather than for excitement behind the wheel.
The Palisade’s three-row layout and upscale presentation make it a strong fit if you want a family SUV that feels more premium than its price suggests. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Drivers describe it as spacious, comfortable, and feature-rich, and they often frame it as a vehicle they feel good about living with day to day. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its strong value, generous warranty coverage, and free scheduled maintenance plan.
That combination points to a vehicle that should be easy to count on for regular family use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the concept and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on interior condition, cabin noise, and evidence of heavy family use. It also makes sense to confirm that the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected, since this model leans heavily on convenience and safety equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Calligraphy trim adds a different grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, additional lower body trim, unique 20-inch wheels, upgraded interior detailing, and a simulated suede headliner. The Limited remains appealing, but it loses some of that more distinctive exterior presence.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 3.8-liter V6 with 291 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available if you want added traction.
- Safety package: Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor and a more sophisticated ultrasonic rear occupant alert system.
- Infotainment: Two touchscreen sizes are offered: 8 inches and 10.25 inches. Only the 8-inch system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the larger screen requires a wired connection for mirroring.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA predicts 21 mpg in combined driving for an AWD model, and the test vehicle averaged 21.1 mpg on a driving loop.
Which 2021 Hyundai Palisade trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point if you want the Palisade’s core strengths at the lowest price. It gives you the roomy three-row layout, standard safety tech, and the V6 powertrain, but it is the trim most likely to feel stripped compared with the higher versions.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should balance equipment and price well. If you want a more complete family SUV without stretching to the luxury-themed trims, this is the one to focus on.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale experience and more advanced safety hardware. It adds the Blind View Monitor and the ultrasonic rear occupant alert system, making it a smart pick if those features matter to you.
- Calligraphy: This is the most luxurious version, with the most distinctive styling and the richest cabin presentation. It suits you best if you want the Palisade to feel as close to a premium SUV as possible.
Limited and Calligraphy trims also get the Blind View Monitor and the more advanced rear occupant alert system, which are useful safety upgrades to keep in mind.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,808.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade's resale value?
The current average of $23,870 sits slightly below last year's $27,008.
That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have less downside left than a shopper who pays closer to the top of the market. Strong feature content and broad family appeal should also help keep demand healthy.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade safe?
It earns top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor and a more advanced ultrasonic rear occupant alert system that can detect movement and send a text message after you leave and lock the vehicle.
Highway Drive Assist is a standout feature because it works smoothly and can handle distance, speed, and lane maintenance very well. Just remember that it is not designed for hands-free driving, so you still need to keep your hands on the wheel.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Palisade or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds more standard equipment, expanded infotainment, and a new luxury-themed trim.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,341, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,870 average.
- It offers strong value appeal with a spacious, comfortable, and versatile three-row layout.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,564, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $23,870 average.
- It keeps the roomy, comfortable family focus while adding a polished look.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of features, satisfaction, and current pricing, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2020 is the better value play, while the 2022 makes sense if you want to pay more for a newer model-year step up.
